Is Atlantic ChristianOutside The Law? by Carroll Aldridge Pursuing The American Dream Maybe a college newspaper is not the place to harp on the nation’s economy. Maybe all concerned would rather hear about visitation, self-regulating hours, and grading systems. But for the college student the real crisis to come can be viewed on the economic scene. A general laxity in morality has caused this country no end of problems in this decade of the seventies. Who cares anymore if the man they voted for was honestly defeated? Who cares if people are dying because they cannot get heating oil that is sitting four miles offshore, waiting for the price to rise? Who cares if there are MIA’s in North Viet Nam? Who cares for anyone else besides number one? On February 4, Duke Power company asked for a raise in rates amounting to a 40 per cent rate hike plus a subsidy to make up for profits lost when its customers cut back their electric consumption 5,2 per cent. On the same day all but one of the major oil com panies raised their gasoline charges by 2V2 to 5 cents per gallon. Credit is due American Oil who said they would cut their prices back by two to four cents per gallon (brilliant advertizing gimmick!). The teamsters are contemplating a trucking strike. Now, truckers have their rigs parked at truck stops, blocking fuel pumps. They want higher cargo rates and lower fuel prices. Violence flares up nearly everyday. One man lies dead and several more are injured. Produce prices in major cities are expected to double by the weekend if the truck traffic draws to a close. Local forces are at work, too. The national average for a half gallon of milk is 84 to 88 cents. In Wilson prices of 95 and 98 cents are commonplace. One wonders if the economic advisors in this nation aren’t truckers who own oil companies with contracts to supply the electric industry. Not one finger has been lifted to support the consumers. The government has imposed rules to keep fuel prices under control, yet they are allowed to raise gas prices about five cents every month. Some control! Everyone (at least for now) needs to forget about Watergate and start thinking of ways to keep this precious country’s economy from inflating to the point of depression. One should be reminded that they said World War One was the war to end all wars. And they called it the Great Depression? The Tax Revolution is a very real way of letting this government gone to .... (author is a religion freak) know about the average man’s situation. One should face the facts, the only way to survive is be rich or so poor as to get all the government relief. Back to the tax revolution. If one year the taxpayers refused to donate their salaries to Uncle Sam, the Federal Bureaucracy would be forced to cut out big budget expenses. Everyone else has to keep a balanced budget, why not? Then strict price and wage controls would be imposed. America would again become an independent country, not relying on foreign imports. Then, foreign aid would be, by necessity, cut. (Not a hard-hearted point of view, just a matter of saving this country first, then helping others.) Unless something is done immediately, depression will hit... hard. In fact, in seven months, students won’t be returning to the classrooms of dear old Atlantic (Kristian College if recession does hit. They will be pursuing the American Dream ,.. being first in the daily bread line. It’s the American way. Briggs Petway Question: In the end, Yossarian deserts in order to find sanity in Sweden— Answer: But he’s not going to get there, he knows that. Question: He’s not? Answer: Oh, no. I mean he s told, “You’ll never get there.” And he says, “I lect all resident hall rooms, and to enter these rooms in order to check on room maintenance, property damage, or to conduct other college business.” This is an unlawful regulation which directly runs contrary to the Constitution of the United State. In the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution it is clearly stated that— "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, house, papes, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” It is of my opinion and others, that you. Dr. Wenger and members of the Board of Trustees, have not prescribed to the letter of the law. Because of this illegal regulation, you have deprived the students residing in the dorms, of their constitutional rights, which is of course depriving them of their civil liberties. The Keeper On Ocracoke Sea-Oats sown to hold the sand Dig in tenaciously When wind and sea march ashore. Forts of wire, timber, concrete, Succumb to the elements While now we spare the coast our help. Spare it war! May the earth enjoy a sabbath Before the shores, skies, and hills be black With second homes, auto-reefs, and oil spills. Who then will tend the “refuge”, Count the fowl and crustacean? Who will enumerate the sand And measure the ocean’s ex panse If we be gone? Where were you, Job, When I held inventory last year? Point Number Two: The code of living for resident women is discriminatory in its regulations. Male students who reside in their dormitories have unlimited hours. Why isn’t it the same for the women? Thus, Dr. Wenger and members of the Board of Trustees, you have committed another unlawful act against the female students at this school. Your actions have in this way, created a great disturbance in the lives of many of the female students here. As with any unconstitutional act or illegal regulation, either an evaluation should be made to correct these two illegal situations or you, Dr. Wenger and members of the Board of Trustees and any other responsible persons engagerf the regulations of these actl should be lawfully tried in . court of law to be held J countable for your actions I denying the civil liberties ofth! Atlantic Christian CoHes^ students. Authority exercised in an illegitimate way is just that illegitimate. My final suggestion for the Board and Dr. Wenger is to read Ed Sorel’s book, Making iht World Safe for Hypocrisy I think you fine folks would find it quite enjoyable. “You know that might be the answer — to act boastfully about something we ought to be ashamed of. That’s a trick that never seems to fail.” —Catch 22 Voice Of Reality I am writing in reference to the letter to the editor in the Jan. 30,1974 edition of this paper. Perhaps I can save those poor misguided young men from a hfe of stark reality. First, let me say that it is high time we got off of the Board of Trustee’s and Administration’s backs. Let us remember that it is only through their divine grace (and a hell of a lot of money) that we are able to attend this institution. Yes, it is only the stern guiding hand of these men that keeps us from leaving here prepared to face a world of real people. Can’t you see how wonderful these men are? (Even if you can’t see these men.) Oh, and you say they have no right to search your room. Rememter, you only pay an outrageous rent for that hole-in-the-wall with the community john, you have no right to privacy. And then, you could have something there that might warp your morals: a Playboy magazine, alcohol, or even a girl. God forbid! Did someone say girl? Well that brings us to another point. Some people say that we should allow visitation, I disagree. Visitation would only hurt the motel business in Wilson. And besides, where can you find such en tertainment,- around here, as that in the parlor of a girl’s dorm on Saturday night? You say go to the movies at Hardy Hall? No thanks, I’ve already, seen “Snow White” three times. You say you’d like to be able to talk privately with your girlfriend or maybe be able to study with her? POPPY-COCK!!! If visitation is allowed, there will be nothing but sex during these hours. Still think I’m wrong! Well just remember: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” And what could be any dirtier than boys and girls being together? Now we come to alcohol. It’s a nice drive to a place to get a beer and sit and talk with friends. That’s the way it should be. I say, let’s keep the drunks out of the dorms and on the streets and highways where they belong!!! Now, I hope you guys can see the follies of your reasoning. You have made valid points about pertinent issues, but you are only children. (20-year-old children). How do you know what students want? You are oiJy students. You only live, eat, sleep, and go to class with other students. The Administration was seen peeping out the window at students walking by last week and somebody showed the Board of Trustees a picture of Hines Hall, These people really know what’s going on; they are really in touch. Besides, what right have you to say how life on this campus should be? Your name is not emblazed across the front of the dorm. You only live David Arnold “Dvke X aa.Heb tociacj Voice Y
