Bulldogs Overpower Wesleyan, 106-70
Hj MIKK TAYi-OK
KOCKY MOUNT — It was
inevitable from the start — the
only real questions to be an
swered was when and by how
many.
The answer to the first
question came early in the
second half when Atlantic
Christian College put on a surge
that left North Carolina
Wesleyan reeling.
After eight minutes in the final
half of the Bulldogs-Bishop clash
here last night only the second
question remained unsolved.
That answer came at the gun,
106-70 ACC’s favor.
The outclassed Bishops made
it interesting for a while.
ACC built up an early 10-point
lead only to see a determined
Wesleyan squad trim the margin
to four.
The Bulldogs built that margin
back up to nine at the half but
then Wesleyan came steaming
back in the early going of the
fmal half to trim the margin
back down to four.
That was it though for the
Bishops.
They missed a chance at
cutting the lead down to two
points and then from there it was
ACC all the way.
The Bulldogs of Ben Pomeroy
outscored their host 10-2 in the
next four minutes to put this
contest away — the first road
win of the season for ACC.
The win boosts the Bulldogs to
7-12 overall this year and 4-2 in
the district.
The offesnive output of the
night, by far the most productive
for the Bulldogs, showed all five
ACC starters in the double
figure column.
Steadily improving Ron
Bowen knocked in 20 points,
most of them on a “for-sure”

Forward Robbie Cook added
16 more points, most on outside
jumpers, while center Allen
Searson and guard Russell
Eaves both had 14. Jimmy Nixon
chunked in 12 more to round out
the starting five.
Bill Manson, whose early
shooting antics kept the Bishops
in the contest, finished with 30 to
lead all scorers.
It was just a case of too much
firepower.
ACC opened fast on the attack,
hitting almost everything they
threw towards the hoop.
And, to go with that attack the
Bulldogs’ pressure defense
forced the Bishops into mistakes
galore in the opening minutes.
The Bulldogs scored the first
six points on buckets by Eaves,
Cook and Bowen before the
Bishops cracked the scoreboard.
That margin jumped up to 22-
10 with just 14:20 gone in the
match.
Eaves had six of those points
to lead the early surge.
The only thing to stop the
Bulldogs now was the Bulldogs
themselves. A rash of fouls sent
Wesleyan into the one and one
situation with 12:30 left and most
of the rest of the first half the
steady sound of the official’s
whistle stopped AC’s attack.
Wesleyan could not take ad
vantage of their chances at the
line or the game would have
been closer in the early going.
But, while Wesleyan could not
rally at the line they did on the
floor and trimmed the lead down
to 27-24 with 7:40 to play. Dave
Hummer and Manson sparked
the rally.
The Bulldogs’ pressure
managed to spread the Bishops’
offense out but the Wesleyan
club penetrated frequently to get
the high percentage shot.
It fell for a while and Wesleyan
made a game of it.
But, the close contest was
short-lived.
Bowen knocked in a short
jumper to make it 29-24 before
Larry Russell hit on a jumper to
send AC up 31-24 with 5:33 to go.
Cook added a basket to send the
margin to 33-24 before Wesleyan
could stop the streak.
That surge lifted the Bulldogs
to their nine-point 45-36 halftime
lead.
Dana Wade joined Manson in
bringing the Bishops back in the
early going in the final half.
Wade scored the first our
points of the half and then
Manson hit three straight shots,
his final bucket made it 50-46
with 16:28 to go.
But, that was as close as the
host could come. Searson got a
bucket to make it 52-46 and 30
seconds later Cook connected to
make it 54-46 with 15:30 to play.
Neal Chambers got two for the
Bishops but then ACC got eight
straight points on two buckets by
Bowen and baskets from . ,
and Eaves to make it 62I
Eaves to make it 62-48.
The only question left
whether a Wesleyan

The Bulldogs also held a 43.25

Dream Match Ends In Forfeit
In intramural basketball
action Monday, the so-called
‘ ‘dream match ’ ’ ended in victory
for Day I as the Waters I squad
forfeited the game in the third
quarter. Waters called it quits
after about a minute had been
played in the third quarter. At
this point Day I was leading 39-

scoring with 11 points.
In other action Day II beat
Hackney I 46-44, Sigma Pi
defeated Delta Sig 44-40, Sig Ep

Bill Kent and Charles Finch

Bulldogs Mystify Methodist Monarchs
By ALLKN ST.\l>LIN(iS
The Atlantic Christian College
homecourt mystery once again
seemed to be working for the
Bulldog team here last Thursday
night.
For the Methodist Monarchs
they were another victim to the
Bulldogs, who by far plays its
best basketball on its own court.
For the mighty Bulldogs, their
spurts against the Monarchs
were just too much for them as
ACC ended up taking the win 87-
81 in this District 29 play.
The Bulldogs knew what to do
Thursday night and to the inside
they went. The inside play of
center Allen Searson and for
ward Ron Bowen was very ef
fective when ACC went to this
play.
For Searson, scored ten
straight points in one two-minute
stretch in the first half to keep
the pace moving the pace
PI
Two On One; Ron Bowen fights alone against two Methodist players
Bowen's baskets counted heavy in the 87-80 Atlantic Christian victory
moving for the Bulldogs.
But for some unknown reason
the Bulldogs stopped going in
side as much and Methodist
came back to tie the game 42 all,
at the half.
Like “Smoking” Joe Frazier
coming out smoking, so did the
ACC Bulldogs at the start of the
second half. They pushed the
margin to 48-42 before the
Monarchs could buy a basket
and that lead held up.
The Bulldogs, played a very
effective zone during the final
half, that pushed the margin out
to 12 at one point before the
Monarchs tried to rally back
With 11:00left, Methodist got a
quick ten points, to cut the
Bulldogs’ lead down to four with
nine minutes left to play.
But, for the Bulldogs, their
cool, calm, collective, head
coach Ben Pomeroy called a
time-out in order to regroup.
After the time-out, the clutch
shooter Jim Nixon came back to
nit eight points in the final
minutes to give the Bulldogs the
victory.
The Bulldogs had a great
shooting night, hitting for 55 per
cent from the floor, while
Methodist hit 53.
The players, well what can I
say, except they played fan
tastic.
Center Allen Searson had
excellent inside moves for tS
evening and finished wSi n
field goals to be top scorer with
22 points.
Forward Ron Bowen, who
could not miss the baseline
jumper, hit for 17 along with an
impressive 13 rebounds.
Co-captain guard Jim Nixon
who got into early t
ul trouble, came back in the
second half to do his thing with
14 points. While the other co
captain Russell Eaves hit for
five.
Both forwards Richard Battle
and Robbie Cook hit for 11 points
to help boost the Bulldog victor;'.
The Bulldogs gave a great
home performance for those
fans that missed it, but wait ■■
this Saturday night the mighp
team plays host to Pfeiffer, so be
their to see another home vic
tory.
Ron Bowen and Allen Searson work hard to get open for a pass 1
a tough Methodist defense.
