Intramurals : Deltas Shock Hackney I |{\ ( AKOl.YN STKVKNS The ACC women travelled to Raleigh Monday night to take on the women of Peace. Going with a defensive attitude the Puppies knew they would have to play tough which thev did. The first half the Puppies looked pretty good and kept within 4 to 6 points most of the half. Then Peace stretched the lead some but the ACC gang kept up the best they could. The Puppies’ shooting was off the first half only hitting 11 out of 50, but the rebounding looked pretty go(xi with 36 "big ones”. The scoring at halftime was spread out with Debbie Purvis leading with 8 followed by Connie Hines and Carolyn Stevens each with 6. The turnovers forced by ACC helped the Puppies stay in the game during th first half. Peace committed 11 turnovers. Other statistics looked like this: team rebounds (1st half) was 36 and 9 turnovers. The leading 1st half IFC Winter SfXfrts Day Begins Tomorrow The Interfraternity Council will hold its second annual Winter Sports Day this weekend. The event will consist of com petition among the four fraternities in various indoor sports. Competition in basket ball, volleyball, and ping pong will be in the form of double elimination tournaments. There will also be a foul shooting contest. Each fraternity will be awarded points according to how the organization finishes in each event. A rotating trophy will be presented to the organization with the highest overall point total. Jimmy Shepherd will serve as director of the event. Officials for the competition in basketball and volleyball include Dave Wells, Bill Kent, and Mike Hick man. The general public is cordially invited to attend, as the tournament schedule is as follows: Friday 4:00 Foul Shooting 6:15 Basketball Games (first round) 7:30 Volleyball games (first round) Saturday 9:30 Ping Pong 1:30 Basketball games No. 3 and No. 4 3:00 Volleyball Games No. 3 and Nor. 4 4:00 Basketball game No. 5 Sunday 1:30 Volleyball game No, 5 2:30 Basketball Game No. 6 3:30 Volleyball Game No. 6 4:30 Basketball and-or Volleyball game No. 7 (if necessary) Note: Foul shooting to be held in Old Gym. The second half the Puppies held their own fairly well but due to tight officiating Carolyn Stevens got in trouble with 4 fouls and had to leave for a while. Donna Smith came in an assumed a good game position and helped Jackie Twisdale out on the boards. Debbie Purvis seemed to still be “cold’) the second half hurting the scoring advantage. The Puppies never gave up and played tough through out the game losing 73- 59. P'inal stats look like this: total points, 59: leading scorer was Connie Hines with 16 points followed by Jackie Twisdale with 14 and Carolyn Stevens with 13. Total rebounds, 67; leading rebounder was Jackie Twisdale with 22 followed by Carolyn Stevens with 17. The Puppies are traveling to Wilmington Thursday thru Saturday (Feb. 20-22) to play in the state tournament. We know the team will be tough and are looking for some good wins! In Intramural Basketball games of Tuesday, February 11, previously winless Delta Sigma Phi rose to the occasion and powered to a 67-57 upset over Hackney I. Four of the five Della starters scored in double figures: Randy Glover (21), Steve Jacocks (20), Walt Spruill (14), and Bruce Porter (10). Hackney standouts were John Beale with 25 points and Scotty Chadwick with 18 points. In other action on the same date, Jim Farthing scored 20 points as undefeated Day I breezed by Hackney II 52-37. Carlos Ebron scored 16 points for the losers. Also, Caldwell continued its winning ways with a 36-25 victory over Sigma Pi. Morris Lovett led all game scorers with 12 points. Day II defeated Alphia Sig 54-45 as Hap Harrison dominated with 19 points. Alpha Sig was paced by Bob Bailey (15 points) and Pooterman Wilkins (12 points). Six more contests took place last Monday night, one of them a key ABA game between undefeated Day I and second place Hackney I. The Hackney studs prevailed with a 49-45 win and knocked Day from the unbeaten ranks. Mike Walker made what proved to be the winning shot with seven seconds left. Two foul shots by John Beale with three seconds left clinched things for Hackney. Also, Caldwell coasted to a 51-20 win over Alphia Sig as Reece Reynolds scored 18 points. Ray Jackson accounted for 11 more in the Caldwell win. Day II relied on the strength of Ronald Barnes (22 points) and Hap Harrison (15 points) as they defeated Sigma Pi 62-36. In other Monday night action, Sig Ep edged a fired-up Delta Sig team 42-37. Rick Babyak led Sig Ep with 11 points. Randy Glover of Delta Sig turned in another outstanding performance as he led all game scorers with 18 points. Also, Hackney II remained in the thick of things with a 47-39 victory over Day II. The Roadside boys were paced by Alfred Sutton and Mike Hickman with 12 points apiece. Carlos Ebron scored 11 points for Hackney. Day was again led by the team of Hap Harrison (13 points) and Ronald Barnes (11 points). Finally, Ray Wilkins scored 19 points and Bob Bailey produced 15 points as Alpha Sig beat Sigma Pi 48-46, John Marsh made the winning basket with three seconds left. The Pis were led by Stuart J. D. Rollings with 17 points.
