A Letter from Coach Pomeroy
February 1,1977
To the Student Body;
On behalf of the basketball team I want to thank all students and
campus organizations who participated in School Spirit night. Your
response to a call for spirit and loyality was overwhelming. It was by
far the best crowd we have had for an Atlantic Christian game in many
years. We are all grateful to Mr. Tingle for planning this event.
The outcome of the game was heartbreaking for all of us. I am en
couraged by the fact that this young team has played some excellent
basketball this season. These young men have worked hard and I am
proud of their effort Monday night. 1 hope that you will continue to
support us in our three remaining home games. School Spirit night
was a success. Let’s do it again!
Sincerely,
Ben Pomeroy

Bulldogs Fall to Campbell
in Overtime; Battle Shines
Coach Ben Pomeroy talks with his players during a time-out in the
Campbell game. .\CC exhibited the type of school spirit, that night,
which had been non-existant the past few years.
By RUSSELL RAWLINGS
With a near capacity crowd on
hand in Wilson Gym Monday
night, Atlantic Christian’s
Bulldogs almost gave the fans
what they wanted.
Almost.
But Campbell, never giving up
despite being behind for the
better part of the second half,
fought back against the Bulldogs
and the crowd to take an 89-81
overtime win.
Atlantic Christian played as
well as it has played all year,
and had a real good shot at
knocking off the perennially
strong Camels. The Bulldogs
had their chance to win the game
in regulation, but John Heckstall
pulled it out of the fire for
Campbell.
With six seconds remaining
Richard Battle went to the foul
line with a one-and-one. He came
through on both chances, and put
Atlantic Christian ahead 73-71.
Campbell had tied the game
up at 71-71 with 1;09 to play, and
Atlantic Christian had managed
to hold the ball until Battle was
fouled. After his free throws
Campbell called time-out, and
moved the ball to their end of the
floor before taking another time
out with two seconds remaining.
Don Whaley took the ball out of
bounds for the Camels on the left
side of the court, and John
Heckstall broke from around the
lane to stand about 22 feet from
the basket.
Whaley threw the ball in, and
Heckstall turned and fired. Once
his uncontested shot went in the
air, it seemed certain that it was
going in. The ball swished
through clean as the buzzer
sounded, and Campbell had
forced the overtime.
Sam Staggers made those first
five points. After his two field
goals and a free throw Campbell
went to the foul line for the rest
of the period, dropping in a total
of 12 out of 15 foul shots during
the extra playing time.
Campbell coasted in from the
foul line to pick up its 14th win of
the season against four losses.
The Camels are 6-1 in District 29.
Atlantic Christian falls to 8-9 on
the season and 1-5 in the district.
The AC players needed a little
time to adjust to such a large
crowd at Wilson Gym, and
Campbell went into the dressing
room with a 33-28 halftime lead.
But early in the second half
Atlantic Christian began to take
control with Battle and Speedy
Gainer igniting the Bulldog
charge. AC led by as many as six
points a t one time, and hit on five
straight field goals attempts in a
two minute span to cause trouble
for Campbell.
But the Camels just kept on
coming, and they should be
given credit for winning against
