Speaking of Nursing...
The nursing taculty welcome
the new freshmen and transfer
students to ACC. We hope you
have a challenging, fun. and
rewarding college experience
with us.
We would like to take this
opportunity to answer some of
the frequently asked questions
about the nursing program.
1.WHAT AND HOW DO I GET
ACCEPTED INTO THE NURS
ING PROGRAM? Sixty juniors
may be accepted into the pro
gram. You will complete an
application and be interviewed
by a nursing faculty member
during the spring semester of
your sophomore year. During
this semester you will also be
measured for uniforms, and we
obtain reference letters about
you. You will need a minimum
grade point average of 2.2 at
Atlantic Christain College to be
considered for the program.
During the month of April in
your sophomore year, you will
be notified of your tentative
acceptance into the program
depending upon your successful
completion of course work taken
that spring semester and during
the following summer school.
2. WHO WUX BE MY ADVIS
OR? Each nursing major is
assigned to a nursing faculty
member who will hopefully be
your advisor as long as you are a
nursing major at ACC. Your
adviser is the person to talk with
about any academic problems
you may be having or any
personal probelms you may
need to talk about with someone
Please do not hesitate to visit
with your advisor. We want to
get to know you, and we want
you to get to know us!
3.WHAT KIND OF EXPERI
ENCES WILL I HAVE IN
NURSING? The ACC nursing
program is organized to help
you learn how to prevent illness
as well as how to care for people
who are ill. You will have
approximately five hours of
class, two hours of classroom
laboratory, and ten to sixteen
hours of clinical practice each
week during your junior and
senior years. Your clinical
practice will occur in the hospi
tal setting, mental health cen
ters, health departments, day
care centers, schools, and
homes. You will have experi
ence in medical-surgical nurs
ing, pediatrics, obstetrics, psy
chiatry-mental health, and com
munity nursing. Our purpose is
to prepare a beginning level
practitioner who can practice
nursing in any of these areas.
WHAT EXPENSES WILL I
HAVE DURING MY JUNIOR
and SENIOR YEARS? Two
sets of uniforms will cost you
approximately $175.00. Text
books and supplies may cost
$200.00 per semester. (We
keep trying to cut back, but
prices keep going up.) You will
need to purchase liability insur
ance which now costs $11.00
per year, and you must have
access to an automobile by your
junior year.
ARE THERE ANY NSG
ORGS I CAN JOIN AS A
STUDENT? Yes!! Please join
the S.N.O. (Student Nurse Or
ganization). Any nursing major
can join. There are guest
speakers, school and community
projects, and lots of social
events.
ARE THERE MEN IN THE
PROGRAM? Yes. During the
past four years, nine men have
graduated from the program.
IS THE NSG PROGRAM A
GOOD PROGRAM? Definitely,
and it is becoming even more
so! The quality of the program
depends a great deal upon the
imput from students. You will
help determine the curruculumn
and the policies of the program.
Remember: work hard, get
involved in college life, and we
look forward to helping you
achieve your professional goals.
’Rithmetic
Several national reports dur
ing the last two years indicate a
shortage in persons adequately
qualified in mathematics. Na
tionwide statistics verify a seven
to eight percent shortage of
qualified mathematics teachers
for secondary school students.
The engineering profession and
other fields requiring a good
mathematical background indi
cate an anticipated shortage of
qualified personnel during the
next ten years. In order to assist
students at Atlantic Christian
College to take the best advan
tage of these oppertunities the
Mathematics Department offers
a three-fold program. First,
each graduate of the college
must have completed at least
one college course in mathemat
ics as part of their liberal arts
education.
Secondly, for students major
ing in another area, the Mathe
matics Department offers a
minor in mathematics.
Thirdly, for those students in
terested in a major in mathe
matics the department offers
programs of study leading to
either the B.A. or B.S. degree.
Though appropriate choices in
these offerings each student has
the opportunity for a solid
background in mathematics fo
graduate school, may be pre
pared as a teacher of mathema
tics, may receive mathematical
preparation for a career in
industrial or governmental re
search, and may acquirc an
excellent mathematical liberal
arts background for a career in
the business world.
Offices for the Mathematics
Department faculty members,
Mr. W. C. Briley, Mr. Jerry D.
Cooper, Dr. Juliana Dowell, Mr.
John Dunn, and the depart
mental chairman Dr. Robert C.
Frazier, Sr., are located at 607
West Lee Street. This building
also contains space for some
support facilities and secretar
ies. The Mathematics Labora
tory and most of the mathemat
ics classes have comfortable
facilities in the C. L. Hardy
Center with some of the classes
meeting in Hines Hall.
For each incoming freshman
the Mathematics Department
provides a mathematics place
ment into a class best suited to
that student’s needs. The work
completed in mathematics in
high school, the math SAT
score, the score on a standard
ized math test administered
during orientation and a profes
sional judgement by a math
faculty member are combined
by a formula to obtain each
student's placement. While the
student is registered at Atlnatic
Christian College, the depart
ment furnishes a Mathematics
Laboratory to assist him with his
mathematical studies.
There are some opportunities
for students majoring in math
ematics to have an earning and
a learning job as a Mathematics
Laboratory Assistant or as a
part-time secretary.
Closely related with the de
partment is the Mathematics
Qub. The Mathematics Club is
a student organization com
posed of students interested in
mathematics. The club meets
monthly for fellowship and pro
grams. During the year the club
has a Christmas party, one other
social event and at least one
visiting lecturer.
Each year, during the spring
semester, the Mathematics De
partment sponsors the “Atlantic
Christian College Regional High
School Mathematics Contest.”
Students and sponsors from the
high schools in our region of the
state are guests on the campus
for a day with the winning
students going on to compete in
the “State Mathematics Con
test.”
