Page Four THE BENNETT BANNER APRIL, 1955 O'KEIL'S HIT APPEALS TO AUDIENCE SOCIAL CHIT-CHAT Members of the Freshman and Senior Theater Guilds slipped back a few years to the “roaring 20’s” and its famous “flapper days,” when they were host to the Vir ginia State Theater Players. It was truly a change of sight and very interesting to see the various types and shapes of legs that the girls had kept in secret as far as our public was concerned. The costumes of the Bennett girls were a great contrast to that of the girls of the Virginia State Players j/nd those of Teachers College, Winston-Salem. However, our at tire seemed to have set a mood which was most enhancing for an evening of fun and dancing. The mambo contest was won by Connie Vance and her partner Jarvis from Virginia State. The runner-ups were also from Virginia State. The Charleston contest was won by a Charlestn trio from Virginia State. The alma maters of the respective schools were sung with deep sin cerity by their “children.” All in all the “flapper party” was a big hit! The Junior Class had a Valentino party which was successful in spite of the prevailing circumstances which were beyond our control. The Junior calypso band played several rhythmic numbers and the members of our class who are “The contemporary creative dancers” finished the program by forming a big red heart. A variety of card games were played and there was constant rhythmic movement with changes in the beat of the feet as j legularly as the records were | versity, Tulane University, Rice changed. There was fruit punch and institute and the University of cookies to refresh those who need- j Texas. just a little uplift in order to Dean \V. Well, we might I Presenting Eugene O’Neil’s great “Mourning Becomes Electra” to an appreciative and attentive audi ence, the Virginia State Players from Petersburg, Virginia made this production a memorable one in the hearts of all who saw it. This play was given on Saturday February 26, 1955 at 8:00 p.m. in (he Bennett Little Theater. The story in brief is the tale of one man’s family and the factors which made a happy home impos sible for them. The beautiful wife and mother, Christine, portrayed by Eunice Majette, was drawn by a powerful interest to the youth and daring of Captain A. Brant, depicted by Reuben Jarves. Chris tine’s willingness to use her daugh ter as a means to the securing of her own ends made one wonder just how great are the ties be tween parent and child. Her daugh ter, Lavinna, was beautifully dra matized by Edith Parham. Briga dier-General Ezra Mannon, the father and master in this miserable iiome was a man driven to seek fortune, fame and adventure a? a result of not being able to grasp the love which he so greatly de sired. Linwood Person did the ttirring portrayal of this man. Others cast in the production were Hugh Ferguson and Alice Rose Carter as Captain Peter Niles and his sister. Hazel. The general handyman, Seth Beckwith, was por trayed by John Chadwick. Visitors to the estate were: Amos Ames, his wife Louisa and her cousin Minnie depicted by Rudolph Mc Collum, Lottie Barksdale and Peggy Drewery, respectively. Members of the Production Staff and Directress Felicia D. Ander son truly did a superb job along with members in making the pro duction the success that it was. The Bennett Little Theater some time previous to this presented their production of “Candida” jn Petersburg. They are slightly shy and innocent look ing which only adds to their love liness. But as far as being afraid that is absolutely an error in our thinking. The dance was very nice and the girls looked like models out of a fairy tale. You can very well see that they have acquired poise and they are charming and if you don’t believe it ask the fellows. The night of March 12th proved another gala affair for the fresh men. The girls of Jones Hall had a dance and it was a complete success with refreshments and garbs of fellows.
