THE ROVING
REPORTER
What is wrong with Bennett
students? There are seemingly
two kinds of students on this
campus —the very few
interested students who are
willing and who always
WORK, and the many
(approximately 625) who are
complacent and who always
COMPLAIN ! It’s bad, but it’s
true that 99 & 44/100% of
B.C. students are classified as
complacent and
complaining~the CC Students
we call them!!
An example of those CC
students on this campus are
those who believe only the
worst about everybody and
everything that does not figure
directly into their immediate
pleasure and social circle. Too
many students say things like
“The student senate has
‘misused’ funds,” or “she (a
leader) is not doing her job.”
But if you CC students were
lealy concerned enough to get
out of your beds some
mornings and go to student
senate meetings, you would
know that not a single cent of
your money is unaccounted
for. You would understand
that it is not the student
leaders who implement rules
and pass regulations alone, you
would know that there have
been many ideas and proposals
made that haven’t even gotten
Election
Campu
For the first time m quite a
while, Bennett’s annual
student elections really looked
like an election was taking
place. The one unique
mechanical “innovation” this
year was the appearance of
voting machines. The machines
were of immeasurable value to
the young “almost old
enough’’ and the
“just-old-enough” to vote age
group that populates the
college campus. That was the
“new-look” mechanically
speaking.
The “new-look”, speaking
in terms of persons, was really
the greatest innovation yet.
There was more spirit, drive,
excitement, and anxiety
behind this election than in
any two or more past elections
“heaped-together!” There was
much more active campaigning
than ever before. There was
even a greater barrage of
posters with “catchy”
campaign slogans, cartoons,
and plain old campaign
promises. There was an

A few students have
confronted members of the
staff and have expressed their
feelings about the Bennett
Banner. Most impressions have
fceen favorable. Among
criticisms however, has been
the JOY column, and so weVe
decided to discontinue that
column.
In addition, we have
leveloped a new editorial
past the student leaders
because there have been
students themselves who
‘buck’ against everything
somebody else starts. You
would also find that the
leaders have gotten kicked in
their “behinds” so many,
many, times while trying to
get improvements for you,
(while you sit back and reap
the benefits).
But, do you know what the
really upsetting thing about
this is? To think that these
same CC students will in 1,2,3,
and 4 years, be out in the
world as world citizens! Can
you imagine a world run by
people who don’t even get
concerned enough to find out
what’s going on around them
and who sit around all day and
believe the worst of what they
hear?
YOU, the CC Students of
Bennett must stop and
examine yourselves and your
past actions. You should ask
yourself, “Am I really active
on campus, an I involved in
campus activities or do I just
sit back and complain.” We
believe that there is a job on
this campus for everyone-jobs
that do not necessarily require
any special skills but that do
require your time and desire to
WORK. To you Bennett girls
we say, Get Involved, Help
you School, Do you part!!!

assortment of fiery campaign
speeches, attractive “sales
pitches” and just some straight
candid facts pointed out.
This, as the members of the
Banner staff see it, is only the
beginning. True, it was a great
step for the traditional
Bennett elections, but is was
merely a beginning step. A
campus election should be
tackled with the same “umph”
with which the presidential
election is handled. If students
are really serious about their
school, the campus leadership
is just as important to them as
state and national leadership is
to the average citizen. Perhaps
its even more so since this
“government” is on a lower
scale that provides for much
more direct contact and
because the governed body is
in even closer contact and
more of the same accord.
Yes, this is progress. But
with each step in progress, if
extreme precaution isn’t
taken, there are certain
to be obstacles.

policy. Letters to the editor no
longer have to be signed. Only
a Banner Staff member(s) will
know who wrote any
particular letter, and this will
be kept in confidence.
We hope that this is an
improvement over past policies
and, we hope to hear from you
soon in the form of a Letter to
the Editor.
What are some functions
you wish the newly elected
student officers execute next
school term?
Unite, to organize the
student body. Our school
needs togetherness, without
togetherness we cannot work
as a whole.
Clem Vaughn
Action speaks louder than
words and I would like to see
action enforced.
Dorothy Barnes
They should provide more
campus activities for the
students.
C.H.
1 would like to see them
woik more for the students.
Debbie Stewart
I want the student officers
to get rid of curfew, and have
more activities on campus
during the week, not only on
weekends.
Sydney Jones
The student union should
have more activities other than
come to sit. Elected officers to
get a committee to let students
know about activities planned
on campus.
Sadie Joyner
I would like to see the
snack bar open later and
especially on Saturday.
Sandra Chapman
First, I’d like to see the
student officers united, and
less interference from the
administration. Also have
more substantial backing for
activities along with more
cultural activities on campus.
Shelia Allen
We’d like to see better food
in the cafeteria, more activities
and turn off lights during the
day. We need to have more
informal meetings with
student officers so that we can
know what is going on.
C. McClain
M. Womack "■
More activities should be
planned on campus.
iStefanie Fogg
I want them to work on a
policy to take exams before
Christmas holidays because it
is a hassell to study for exams
after the holidays.
Elicia Hooker
I want them to change the
policy of chapel atten^nce,
which adds on hours for
graduation.
Linda I want the officers to
represent the student body.
With the officers we have now
everything we do has to be
black orientated. They should
let the students know what’s
going on and not wait until the
last minute.
Marvelyn Fuller
We need a new curfew with
some limitations and more
campus activities.
Angenita Whaley
At least try to get some
improvements on campus even
if entails carrying on activities
to accomplish this.

Dear Editor,
True, this years elections
were perhaps the most spirited
that Bennett has ever seen.
Many students became actively
involved in campaigning for
their particular candidate. But
what frightens me is the extent
to which one would go to get
her particular candidate
elected. I have reference
particularly to the letter
placed in the student union
accusing Miss Friends
supporters of using
‘‘underhandedness”,'
“slander,” and “intimidation,”
to secure freshmen votes. I
say, “what intimidayon, what
slander, and what
underhandedness?” No one
can point to any dirtiness in
our campaign. Freshmen
themselves can vouch for this.
Resorting to lies seems to me
to be the most despicable kind
of campaigning. I say all this in
the hopes next years elections
will see a cleaner, and yet
spirited campaign.

Dear Editor,
I hope now that we as bla(^
people realize the impact that
bombings of Ralph
Featherstone and William
Payne have on black
Americans. Once again it is
clear that white people do not
intend to sit back quietly and
watch while black people rise
above the mire that they
(whites) have created for us.
The inhuman treatments
against the AAA tenants here
in Greensboro, the violence
directed against the A&T and
Dudley students in May, in
Alabama, the aresenic
poisonmgs of cattle belonging
to black Muslims, the attacks
on blad( children in Lamar,
S.C., the degrading treatment
of Bobby Seale, and the
killings of Panthers in various
parts of the country all point
to the extent to which whites
will go to control the black
man. Where do we go from
here?
