You can look down the lunch line and easily spot them, ' The can fee seen clu tched in the fists of their hun- owners. From a distance they resemble little 2x4 green meal tickets, but a close up view reveals that they by no means have any resemblance to meal tickets anymor^ These tickets look as though they have been through any and everything, and in some cases they have. The poor little things have been crushed, crinkled, to r n, and stepped on. They have been wash ed, drycleaned, used as book- marks, fly swatters, fans and any other conceivable use. Des pite all this these terribly mu tilated little things stiU manage to make it to the head of the line where they are punched by Mrs. Willis. However, there are a few that don’t make it. That’s those that have died from bat tle fatigue or are just missing fii action. Whatever the case, they are nowhere to be found. You can easily spot a lost ticket owner by the sheepish grin she gives Mrs. Willis when she asks where her ticket is. The offender usually looks up at Mrs. Willis and says, “A funny thinghappen- en to my meal ticket.” And you can believe that the story is funny. By the last meal, dinner, Mrs, “Willis just shakes her head and lets you go on fcy. All 1 can say is, “what’s next?” pag? 5 Bennett’s Dormitory Director Syndrome There’s a lot of talk and conversation about what’s happening in the dormitories concerning dorm directors. Most students are completely confused about the situation and can’t figure out what’s happening. It seems absurd to most students that two freshmen dorms are served by one dorm director. Freshmen! The ones for whom most concern has been expressed in terms of living arrangements and permissions. These “new-to-college life” stu- dents are virtually living with little adult guidance. Then what really perplexes the students even more is the fact that there are two dormitory directors in the ctorm that houses juniors and seniors. Two! Why that’s almost one for each floor! Now look at it,,, 18 and 19 year olds, first time away from home for some, and living with one director for two dorms! Thenlook at the other side of it: 20-22 year olds, in their third and fourth year in college, living with two adults in the dorm! There has also been talk of antics being pulled by freshmen in the “non-live-in-director” dorm that are frowned on as “pretty bad’ by other students ( not to mention the possible reactions of parents, administrators, trustees, and the general public,) Then a great deal of concern on the parts of the students for one of the directors in the junior-senior dorm has been expressed. It is felt “a ^me” that the director on the i5)per level has to climb the stairways several times a day when she already wear a bandage around one of her ankles constantly. This seems cruel, Afterall, if she must stay in the same dorm with another director while there is a dorm without a live-in-director, then it seems that at least something could be done for comfort’s sake. There is an empty room on the lower level of the dorm with no one in it. Why not, for convenience sake, give her that room. Better still, there is what is called "a guest room” on the main level that is oH)osite the office. Very, very seldom is there an on-campus guest requiring boarding in a dorm. Then, if the need does arrive, there is another guest room in the same location in Cone, But whafs even better, why not make the identical upper level room the guest room - for all the use a guest room gets around here anyway. Why make the lady suffer? What are the facts? Is it an experiment of some kind? Is the ex- periment aimed at making the graduating seniors social cripples next year when they must be out in the world? Is it aimed at “thinking out” the Freshmen class by letting them do what they want to? It seems that these are the aims. What is rationale?!? Whose idea is it?!? F.nTTOR’S MAILBOX Students Concerned About Campus Dear Editor, It is quite evident that Bennett College has little or no pride in its campus newspaper. Maybe the administration does not realize the role that the paper plays. I The Bennett Banner is published by the students at Bennett College, Greensboro, North Carolina 27420. The staff desperately needs two typewriters and two inexpensive, yet good cameras. After years of requisitioning and begging, I’m sure this school can squeeze out the necessary funds to make ourpaper among the best, Myra Davis Dear Editor, This year, having gotten off to a bad start already, proves to be quite exciting. Each new class brings in some revolution, but this year may top it all. Although this new freshmen class is relatively small, their spirit is very high. Most have settled down to Bennett’s daily routine while a small number are “definitely doing their own thing” The Library Hour Problem Thomas Holgate Library Schedule Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 8 a,m, .. 5 p.m. 8 a,m. --5 p.m. 8 a,m, -- 5 p.m, 8 a,m, -- 5 p.m. 8 a,m, -- 5 p.m, 8 a,m, — 12 noon 6 p,m, --9 p,m. 6 p.m. — 9 p,m. 6 p.m. — 9 p.m, 5:30 p.m. — 8:30 p.m. 1 p.m, 5 p,m. By now, many unsuspecting students have gathered their books and hiked over to the Holgate Library on a Monday night to prepare for Tuesday’s classes. But only to find out that there are no Monday oi^t library hours. Who ever heard of such? A college library without Monday ni^t hours? Are you sure this is a college? Then to infuriate students more and to ‘rub in' the fact of bad library hours that there are Friday ni^t hours 5:30 to 8:30 p.r. No Monday nigjit hours, but there are Friday night hours !! Now how practical is that? There are no Saturday classes, but plenty of Tuesday classes. Also, students have noticed that there aren’t any Sunday hours at all any more. Any work not completed by 5:00 p.m, Saturday wiU also be incompleted for Monday mornings’ classes it seems. An explimation seems in place and what’s even more in- portant, a revision of hours seems more id order. Situations no matter how crude and wild. Several have already become widely known on campus for their cafeteria antics and bullying with so much youthful vitality, I would love to see these young Black Sisters take a role in campus activities which would benefit all. Why let such leadership go to waste? Or is there any wei^t in the old statement that Singed, Concerned Dear Editor, Having just recently learned of a new group formed in one of the freshmen dorms, I was quite concerned with the purpose be hind this creation. Why any de^ cent, mature young Black Sister would want to call herself a M.F. is beyond my reasoning. Then I heard one proudly admit that the purpose behind the group was to raise helU At first this really disgusted me as I say/ this group of nicely dressed girls parade into the cafeteria, publicly dis playing their home training. Then I felt sorry for them because I think this is their way of tel ling us that they can not fit in with things around here and find it difficult to join in the campus activities which are on the most part suffering from student ap athy, I hope that the student lea ders will kindly reach out to all the new students and personally invite them to join the various activities offered, especially (Continued on Page 7)
