A Hidden Message in “Sex Week”
“Behind every dark cloud, there’s a silver lining.” So says
an old cliche and one has to believe that this is true, especially
in times of adversity and conflict of ideas.
One such “dark cloud” hovered over the Bennett campus
under the ahas of “Sex Week.” The series of programs began
with a lecture entitled, “Is Sex Funny ?” and ended with a pro
gram entitled, “How to Stop a Rapist.”
To make a story short, the presentations lacked a “tactful”
approach to a mixed audience and many left somewhat red-faced.
The programs did get a message across to the audience.
It was noted that a local newspaper account of one of the
programs painted a very “distasteful” picture. The person mak
ing the statement said an image of the evening based on the
description by the newspaper, gave a negative communication
to the reader.
The week concluded and Belles returned to their classes with
different perspectives on life.
You might have asked yourself (if you attended the pro
grams), “Did they serve any purpose?” These programs dra
matically brought to the surface that there is a “real world”
around us and not all of it is pretty or nice, but it does exist.
Everything was not right about the presentations, nor was
it all wrong, but it was real. And as mature, assertive adults,
we must be able to distinguish between the two, face it and deal
with it.
A poster seen recently on the wall of an office says simply,
“We live by believing something, not by debating many things.”
We must learn to accept things not as they appear to be,
but, for what they can become. In this way, we may live longer
and be much happier.
LSAT, GRE, NTE Scheduled in the Area
by Sharon L. Sanders
This year the Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT) will
be given at Bennett College on Saturday, Oct. 8. Students
who missed the deadline for registration may walk-in for
a $10.00 fee if they have the form completed.
The LSAT will be given at W’inston-Salem State Uni
versity on the following dates: Dec. 3, and Feb. 4, Apr. 15,
and July 15, 1978. From now on it will be the student’s re

cational Testing Center, not Bennett’s Counseling Center.
There are plenty of Graduate Record Examination appli
cations available at the counseling center. The GRE will
be given Oct. 15 at UNC-G.
There are not any applications available at the coun
seling center for the National Teacher Examinations but,
students may obtain one by writing the National Teacher

Dear Editor:
One of the most forgotten of
the Bennett traditions are the
‘‘BENNETT B’S,” a code of living
that will never grow old. In
cluded among those beneficial
ideals are the Friendly B’s:
Letters to tke Editor
Be sincere in forming friend
ships with others
Be tolerant of the differences
which exist in people
Be reserved in your friendship
with the opposite
From Freshman to
Sex Isn't Funny to
by Yolanda M. White
Many opinions surfaced after
Chris Miller, a writer for “Nation
al Lampoon,” visited Bennett Col
lege to present “Is Sex Funny: a
Program on the Parody and Satire
Used in Sexual Literature.”
On Sept. 12, Bennett students
and faculty members assembled
in the Pfeiffer Science assembly
hall for this A.C.E.S. program.
After Miller told a story about
a black Archie Bunker family
more than half of the audience
dismissed themselves. Students
Senior All Agree
Bennett Belles
continued to leave during the rest
of this presentation.
After the program many opin
ions were expressed. A freshman
said “The seminar was strictly for
those who could tolerate such
openness about sex.” A sophomore
stated that it was a put-down as
far as Bennett was concerned and
that it was very unbeneficial.
A senior and junior shared the
same opinion that the program
was distastefully misplaced con
sidering Bennett’s theme for the
year is “A Touch of Class.”

The most forgotten of these
appears to be the idea of toler
ance. One would think as black
people, we would be among the
first to be tolerant of differences
in others. But we are not.
As a student of the Bennett com
munity, you are a member of an
elite group of persons whose ac
tivities comprise a shared com
mon life—in the residence halls,
dining room and classrooms. In
such a community individuals with
varying temperaments, values and
lifestyles come into contact with
each other. Unfortunately, due to
a lack of tolerance, objectivity and
maturity, such interaction some
times results in misunderstand
ings, resentment and confusion.
We are about to enter the 21st
century where different lifestyles
will be most marked. And often
it will be repulsive to you to know
that some people have different
values than those you possess.
Malicious gossip, intimidation and
stereotyping will do more harm
than objective reasoning. It is
vital to the morale of the campus
that each student arrive in her
own thinking at the recognition of
the dignity of each student, fac
ulty and staff member. Group liv
ing is always more a matter of at
titude of mind.
Successful living away from the
security of home depends on the
growth of maturity in the social
perspective of all involved. If you
learn while at Bennett the great
lesson of tolerance you will have
reached new intellectual and so
cial heights. You will have learned
humility and compassion. Don’t
strain yourself with who is gay
or who is not. There are more
important things for you to con
sider.
