Barr The Bennett College classes, clubs, and sororities are sponsor ing several activities this year. Senior Class: November—Senior class will be responsible for ordering an nouncements. December—Sponsoring a dance and also a Christmas raffle. 1. Any college/university student with an interest in communi cations is eligible to enter. 2. Entrants in this contest should submit an original essay on the subject of “The Impact of Communications of the Family: Responsibilities and Strategies.” 3. Entries must be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side of the paper, with margins of 1-1V2 inches on all sides, and error-free. The manuscript should be identified only by title. A separate cover page Junior Class: November 21-22—Sponsoring a Marathon Dance December 1-7—Junior Week Monday—Fleamarket. People are asked to bring clothes and other items they wish to sell. Sunday—Small Vesper Service Birthday Dinner The junior class president, Josie Hudley, said, “The reason I’m em phasizing the ball is because I was very disappointed when I came to Bennett that there were no big social affairs.” She also hopes that the Ball will become a traditional event sponsored by future Junior classes. Sophomore Class: The sophomore class has many tentative ideas which include: bake sales, candy apple sales, an arts and crafts festival, a fashion show, a Big Sister project for community children, fund-raising for Sickle Cell Anemia Fund, and the annual sophomore weekend. Freshmen Class: January—Disco February—Selling of carnations Bake Sale Debate Society: The Debate Society is now re sponsible for the radio show, “Bennett Belles on the Move,” which will be broadcast from A&T State University campus. The show will focus on interests of both the Bennett and black com munities. On Nov. 14 the Society will sponsor a dance, “Belles Sis ters Dance,” which is a spin-off of the Blues Brothers. Debates are also scheduled this year; topics will include School Budget and Cafeteria Food. Fund raisers will be the selling of doughnuts and a Tupperware Party. Pre-Alumnae Club: October 24—Sponsoring a dance from 9 p.m.-l a.m. ni the Stu dent Union. Proceeds from the dance will be given to the United Negro College Fund. October 25—Sponsoring a carnival on B’ennett’s Campus. October 26—Miss Pre-Alumnae dinner will be held in the dining hall. November 7—A Supper Club will be held from 8-11 p.m. February—Members of the Pre- Belles participate Andrea Burch The first annual Miss Phi Beta Sigma pageant was held in the ballroom of A&T State University on Oct, 11. The contestants from Bennett included Arlene McNeil, Rennett Edwards, Portia Griffin, Lynn Alumnae are planning a trip to the United Negro College Fund Conference in Chicago which will involve all 41 black col leges. Officers will be elected for the National Alumnae Asso ciation and the National Pre- Alumnae Association. Student Music Educators Association: October—Selling Katherine Biech Candies to raise money to attend the National Conference of Mu sic Educators which will be held in Winston-Salem Nov. 7-9. Photography Club: The Photography Club is spon soring a campus wide photography contest. The contest is opened to all the administration, faculty staff and students. Each contestant can submit a maximum of three photographs, either black and white or color. The entry deadline is Nov. 26. For additional infor mation, contact a member of the photography club. Delta Sigma Theta: October 30—Sponsoring a Hallo ween Party for the children of Mclver School. November 8—Sponsoring a spa ghetti dinner in the coffee house. November 25—A Thanksgiving basket will be given to the needy. December 18—A Christmas basket will be given to the needy and clothes will be shipped to the Haitian people. Alpha Kappa Alpha: October—A Health Fair will be sponsored consisting of a variety of health agencies talking about health policies. November—A fashion show to raise money for a Thanksgiving basket. December—A fund raising activ ity to raise money for a Christ mas basket. Yearly—Assist in tutoring in the Upward Bound program which is to prepare high school stu dents for secondary institutions. in Sigma pageant Thorne, Sandra Nelson, who placed second runner up, and Yolanda Moore who was first runner up. Alpha coronation held Tina M. Johnson The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity held its Miss Alpha Coronation on Thursday, Oct. 8, in the A&T Stu dent Union Building. Among the participants was a Bennett fresh man, Rhonda Whitted. Miss Whit- ted, who is an ISP major from Fayetteville, N. C., was requested by an Alpha member to take part in the Miss Alpha Contest. The judges committee for the contest consisted of 14 Alpha members. The criteria used to judge the girls involved was ap pearance, personality, poise, an oral interview, and a talent seg ment. For her talent exhibition Miss Whitted did an original mod ern dance. Her music was, “Be hold The Only Thing Greater Than Yourself: Birth” from the “Roots” soundtrack. When asked what the fraternity wanted in Miss Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha’s chapter president James Wood said, “We are looking for a young lady who exemplifies to day’s woman with an awareness of current news and the world around her. We did not want someone who was just pretty.” The Alpha Phi Alpha Court for the 1980-81 year is as follows: 5th runner-up. Miss Sphinx- man: Zelda McCauley 4th runner-up. Miss Alpha Sweetheart: Cherl Gibson 3rd runner-up. Miss 1906: Rhonda Whitted 2nd runner-up. Miss Seven Jew els: Janice George 1st runner-up. Miss Beta Epsi lon: Karen Scott Miss Alpha Phi Alpha: Karen M. Reynolds The Miss Alpha Court rode in the parade at half-time during A&T’s homecoming game last Saturday. Players welcome new members Terri Ford The Bennett College Players welcomed freshmen and new members to the B.C. drama club on Oct. 7, 1980 in the little theatre. They introduced themselves by performing a little skit to make everyone feel comfortable and ex cited about joining. President Cynthia Mitchell talked about meeting dates and possible plays to be performed. Those plays include West Side Story, Porgy and Bess, Guys and Dolls and many other productions. There are usually two plays dur ing the first semester and one big spring production. The B.C. players isn’t just act ing. It’s a variety of things. Work ing behind the scenes is just as fulfilling as performing. For in stance, working with the lights, costumes, and props is an excel lent experience for anyone. The question is where do you start? You start at a point called initiation. To be a Bennett Player a person has to go through an initiation period which lasts a week. The “Playees” have to fol low specific rules in order to be come a B.C, Player. Some of the purposes of the B.C. Players are: 1. To provide a feeling of unity in working with others, 2, To help develop and improve one’s speech. 3. To provide a means of self- expression for members. Persons can join the club on a semester basis, which means each semester the club takes in more people. The people who join sec ond semester also have to go through an initiation period, but it’s all in fun. Good year ahead for Omicron Eta Chi Twenty-three new members were recently inducted into Omi cron Eta Chi, the Bennett College Chapter of the American Home Economics Association. Some activities scheduled for the school year are: Bake Sales, Dessert Tasters Party, An Altera tions Pool and attendance at the Annual State Meeting to be held in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
