PAGE TWO THE BENNETT BANNER FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1982 Involvement needed by blacks 1C riA pvrnsf^ for The NAACP recently conducted a drive to make students more politically aware. The campaiRn came about due to the outcome of the local elections last spring. No blacks were elected to City Council because of the lack of support from the black community. Support from the students here and at A&T could be instru mental in avoiding' this in the future. Blacks all over the country have shown a lack of interest in political affairs. This indifference is increasing daily here on campus. There is not only apathy toward political and national affairs but toward world, local and campus affairs also. At a time when young black women need to be aware of our surroundings, we have an uncaring and unrealistic attitude. We do not want to pt involved in anything other than our personal affairs. The excuse of being too young and inexperienced is often used. The reasoning that one more person will not help much is often cited also. How can the realization be made that we will not always be young and sup posedly unaffected by our surroundings ? There is no excuse for students here not becoming involved in off-campus activities. Joining the NAACP and work ing "rthe polls during election time will fit into a college student s schedule. Unfortunately, many of the Belles do not get involved m campus activities and should not be expected to participate off-campus. During most Vesper services, the students in attendance can be counted on both hands and te€t. When A.C.E.S. is body can be seen going in the opposite direction But if A&T, the Cosmos or the Trevi Fountain throws a party, half of Bennett is there doing the Smurf. It is true that voter registration here was a success, but the uninterested group still made its presence known. It is also common know edge that there are those in every group who do not care about anything at al . Why do these types have to appear in black colleges, the black community or the black race at all? We need to fight even harder to control this negative attitude here because of the size of the college. We can only hope that awareness will soon dawn. (Yolanda T. So why is it that no one seems to be reading this newspaper? Could it be that the students on this campus don’t think the paper is interesting, enough? If that is where the problem lies, then it would only be fair to say that the students on this campus aren’t interested enough in our college because the information given in the newspaper is about Bennett College. Being a reporter for the news paper, I know how much time and effort my colleagues and I put forth to inform fellow students about activities at Bennett. There fore, we would appreciate your time in reading the paper. It is saddening to see students pull the newspaper out of their mailboxes and directly pitch it into the garbage can. Let’s not shortchange ourselves because we pay for this newspaper. As a mat ter of fact, each copy of the Banner costs about 75?*. Hopefully, the cost of the paper will not inspire you to read it, but the content of the paper will. Deborah Lewis Editor; Since I’ve been here. I’ve noted Belles discarding pamphlets, lit erature and The Bennett Banner. Most of the items discarded are never probed by Belles to see if they are of importance. This is why so many activities take place on campus, and many of us complain that we had no knowledge of them. Many people feel that there must be a better way to deter the discarding of college handouts. I’m not really sure what the an swer is, but I feel that if members of the staff, administration and other B'elles take time to relay certain information, then Belles should take interest in it. Also, the Post Office staff takes time to distribute various infor mation in mailboxes for our con venience, but we still discard these items. Maybe in the future we will be more considerate and probe col lege literature and pamphlets for our betterment as Belles. Cynthia Spruill
