Gloria graduated from Bennett and earned a master’s degree in social work from Columbia Uni versity. She worked at the Spofford Juvenile Center in Bronx, New York, for 31 years. She volunteered as executive director of a youth program which provided rec- reational, cultural, voca tional and educational ac tivities for after-school and summer programs. For her dedication and hard work she received the John V. Lindsay Award from the Citizens’ Committee in 1993. If Gloria leaves a legacy for Bennett CoUege students, faculty, adminis tration, staff, and African- Americans, it will be foimd in her words: “I don’t fool myself that there are no more bridges to cross. You’ve got the' youth and hopefully the enthusiasm and purpose. We must move for ward. You have to make a commitment or all the work which has ben done before will be for naught. College undergradu ates interested in biomedi cine careers can do just that this smnmer. The Graduate School of Baylor College of Medi cine in Houston sponsors alO-week pro^am, the Sum mer Medical and Research Training Program (SMART), which gives aspiring scien tists first-hand experience through work in laboratory or clinical settings. Partici pants also attend seminars £ind educational activities. Acceptance into the national program is highly competitive, with more than 700 applicants for approxi mately 100 positions. Selection is based on the applicant's commiment to an excellent prepartion for a career in the biomedi cal sciences. "This exciting program cuts across cultural barri ers, bringing together stu dents from smaU and large universities, Ivy League and historically black colleges," said Dr. Gayle R. Slaughter, SMART Proram director. "Enthusiam for science and learning is the common among these students from diverse backgrounds." Since 1989, 471 stu dents have participated in the SMART Program, and more than 85 percent of the participaticipants have al ready entered graduate or medical school. The program is funded in part by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the National Science Founda tion. Participants receive a stipend, and dormitory housing is available. The Bennett bookstore in the basement of the Student Union will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m.to 4 p.m. African Arts The United Arts Council of Greensboro will produce the eighth annual African American Arts Festival from Jan. 15 through March 20. The two-month long festival is staged as a celebration of the outstanding contributions that African American artists have made to the American culture. Paid Internships Paid svunmer internship programs will be given by the Institute of Government to 30 students of all majors. Apphcations for the 10-week internship will be accepted from any sophomore, junior or senior who is a North Carolina resident.. Interns will hve in Raleigh on the Meredith College campus and earn $200 per week.
