2 • BENNETT BANNER • MAY 9, 1994 The opinions expressed in this column are the author’s and do not necessarily represent the staff of the Banner. Editorial Banner editor says farewell Dear Graduating Class of 1994, It is with great pride that I have the opportunity and privilege to communicate with you in our last issue for this college semester. We as African-American women have been nur tured here at this fine institution filled with traditional values, culture, class and style. Although our majors are diverse, we do have this in common, and that is — the excellence to be our best,— do our best and to achieve great things. When I first came to Bennett College I was a naive and young woman. Bennett has molded me into a woman. Bennett has helped me leam to appreciate many cultures, not just my own. I’ve learned how to be a better giver. I’ve learned discipline. I’ve learned patience and I have learned that sometimes things don’t necessarily go my way all the time. But that’s okay. My Bennett sisters have the attitude that whatever it was it wasn’t meant for you anyway. Something better will come along when the time is right. My graduating class don’t allow trivial things to steer you from your path. Always keep marching. Always keep stepping and never look back. Keep your head held high and don’t allow anyone to diminish that, for you are a Bennett Belle. During this past month many have approached me and have asked this same question. “Kim, how do you feel about graduating; aren’t you excited?” At the time, I really didn’t know. But now that this chapter in my life is quickly coming to an end I must honestly share with you that I’m scared, yet excited. Bennett has been my little nest and yes it’s going to be a transition, but not just for me, for all of us. I guess that’s a part of growing up and I realize that one must never fear change. Bennett will always have a place in our heart and that will never change. Don’t see this as an ending; but see it as a beginning. As we leave this place and pursue our perspec tive career goals I’d like to share the following advice with you: 1. Always make God your center focus. 2. Follow your heart. 3. Never get discouraged. 4. Be modest in what you say and do. 5. Don’t let others intimidate you. 6. Be honest. 7. Be assertive but not pushy. 8. Smile until your face hurts. 9. Make a good first impression. 10. Always keep laughing. 11. Take constructive criticism and use it. 12. Help others along the way and in turn they will help you. I know in my heart of hearts that we the class of 1994 are destined to do great things. I wish for my class a happiness that multiplies forever. I sincerely love each of you and please know that you will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. God Bless You All. McCorvey’s deja vu semesters i 6uipe wocw- MtROH EKmMW, T J wTOwa UIMNCE Chilee’ Hailes Banner Reporter It’s deja vu for SGA president Pamela McCorvey. Last semester McCorvey was denied ad mission into Bennett pend ing a judicial investigation of a Belle Honor Code viola tion. She pleaded not guilty to the charge, and was found not guilty by the same judi ciary committee that later reinstated her. This semester McCorvey has been im peached as SGA president, as a result of an alleged haz ing incident. Dr. TiajuanaMosby, vice president for student affairs, was asked if a pub lic statement would be made to the college regarding McCorvey’s removal fi-om office. “No, there is no need for that,” Dr. Mosby said. “It would only ignite bad feel ings, and it is best for every one to just let it be. Student activities are stiU going for ward and there are only four weeks of school left.” One student was displeased with the way that the administration handled McCorve/s removal. Monica Blackwell, biology major, senior said,’! do not feel that the judiciary board has the right to re move McCorvey from office because they did not put her in office and it was very un- f^ for them to^not inform us. What kind of system are we running here?” The Chair of the Judiciary Committee Leon McDougle, said, “The judi cial hearings that are con ducted by me and my board are confidential. It is not fair to the student to discuss any ioformation. McCorvey declined comment. Mosby did not say who will replace McCorvey.
