2 • BENNETT BANNER • SEPTEMBER 20, 1996 OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION • OPINION Bennett would not benefit if it became coed Student Opinion Poll: Paquita Herring Following the Supreme Court’s recent decision in June (i.e., state financed single-sex schools are unconstitutional) the Citadel military college in Charleston ended 153 years of male-only education. For 70 years Bennett’s students have not been concerned about the sexism that many other students often encounter on coed cam puses. I have never given much thought to what Bennett would be like if it were in the same situation as the Citadel — having to provide for a coeducation. Minor changes would involve living arrangements in some of the residences halls. These could lead to changes in visitation between males and females. I doubt that males would have to greet their visitors in the parlor the way that Belles do now. We’d obviously have to change our mascot. The “American Heritage Dictionary” defines a belle as being... a popular attractive girl or woman especially the most popular in the group. It is hard to fathom the idea of Bennett with male intercollegiate sports such as football, basketball, and track with the “Bennett Belles” name on the uniform. The alma mater would also have to be changed to make the idea of male students a reality. Phrases from the College song such as"... We thy daughtersfind the fair.would hold little significance and may even be considered as being discriminatory. If Bennett were forced to accommodate male students, it may make history, but it would certainly lose a lot of the rich tradition and culture that we have all grown accustomed. opinion eicp^teMed, in tAiA cc£iunn i& ouiiiM,and(U>eAnot nece6a£mfy>tefi££ttAe opinion oftAeentiiteSSennettSianne^ataff.
