The author of the No. 1 Black
board bestseller “Sister, Sister” is
back with a soulful tale of love,
betrayal, and friendship.
Eric Jerome Dickey offers
“Friends and Lovers,” (384 pp.
NALIDutton $5.99 paperback) a
chronicle of the lives, loss and
love of four young Afirican-Ameri
can people in Los Angeles. There's
definitely a lot to talk about in the
city of angels.
Debra, an OB-GYN nurse, has
had her share of no good men and
has decided to withhold sex until
marriage. Her best friend, Shelby,
a flight attendant, believes that if
she has sex, she will secure mar
riage.
Tyrel, a computer company ex
ecutive, has had enough of meet
ing the wrong women. However,
he is hesitant about being in a seri
ous relationship because his father
cheated on his mother and later left
his family to be with the other
woman.
Tyrel's best friend, Leonard, is
a successful stand-up comedian,
and is ready for a serious relation
ship.
After meeting at Denny's, Debra
and Leonard hit it off immedi
ately. Soon after, Shelby meets
Tyrel. The attraction is instant as
well as the consequences.
Leonard is no longer laughing
when he has to make a decision
about what matters most to him.
The lingering question in his head
is, is he really ready for a steady
relationship and the love of a good
woman.
Their relationships begin to
take different courses after hitting
the beaches, comedy clubs, and
restaurants. Debra, still on her no
sex before marriage kick, becomes
seriously involved with Leonard
but it takes Shelby and Leonard a
little longer to reach that point.
Unfortunately, Shelby and Tyrel
leam the hard way about the con
sequences of having sex before
marriage and that a long lasting
relationship doesn’tbegin with sex.
A misunderstanding concerning an
unwanted pregnancy ultimately
destroys Tyrel and Shelby’s ro
mance.
Shelby then moves to San Di
ego to rid her mind of Tyrel. Mean
while, Tyrel takes a job offer in
San Francisco.
Shortly after moving, Shelby
meets Richard and becomes en
gaged. Tyrel, on the other hand,
enjoys his freedom by going out
with different women night after
night.
After tragedy strikes in the new
lyweds' house, Shelby and Tyrel
rush to L. A. to be by their best
friends' side. It really makes you
wonder if distance really makes
the heart grow fonder? Will they
get back together? Check out
“Friends and Lovers” to find out.
Despite the trials and tribula
tions the couples had to face, in the
end they realized the most valu
able gi ft to give or receive isfriend
ship. It is a clear distinction be
tween friends and lovers but only a
few can differentiate.
Friends and Lovers” is a must
read. I was hooked from the first
sentence. Dickey's ability to illus
trate both male and female points
of view is outstanding.
So when it's time to sit back and
relax don't forget your copy of
"Friends and Lovers," located at a
bookstore near you.
Also by Dickey, "Milk in My
Coffee and "Sister, Sister."
