FEATURES • NEWS • FEATURES • NEWS • FEATURES • NEWS New center director at WLI to teach self-care management BY SHAYLA WEST Reporter "My mission in life is to develop young women." This is the state ment Dr. Janice Brewington, made about her position as the new direc tor for the Center For Women and Health at the Women’s Leadership Institute. A pediatric nurse practitioner, Brewington said she hopes to bring a better understanding of self-care management to the Bennett Col lege community. "Self-care man agement involves us taking con trol of both our lives and our selves, so that we can better our selves and maintain our health,” she said. Brewington said that self-care management involves taking care of the physical, men tal, and spiritual health. "There is a definite link between each of these aspects." Brewington is working with Dr. Roxanna Scott, acting chair of the Psychology Department on a project to bring self-care management to Bennett students. She said she plans to ar range informal forums with stu dents about women’s health is sues. “I want to have talk sessions in the dormitories, and give the students a chance to talk and ask questions about issues concerning their health." She said she is looking for stu dents who are interested in becom ing trained peer health advocates. “They [students] could deliver the message better than I could." Different opinions expressed about campus escort services TANIKKIA TYSON Staff Reporter The campus public safety es cort services have been in effect since fall 1997, and since that time many students have complained about the service. According to the policy insti tuted by the Public Safety Depart ment, if a dorm resident returns to campus after 2 a.m., she must wait for at least 30 minutes in the public safety office or outside the en trance of her dormitory for an of ficer to escort her to her residence hall. A public safety officer may not be available to escort a s tuden t when she arrives back on campus. Officers are often patrolling vari ous areas throughout the campus. Leon J. McDougle, director of Public Safety, said that the half- hour interval [for an escort] is a reasonable compromise and an orderly solution for all who abide by it. “Students here should gov ern their time according to their plans,” he said. “Because there may be so many students at once coming onto cam pus, it may take a half an hour to escort several to different dorms." SACS Continued from Page 1 cem is limited student involvement. I think this is due more to logistics like one’s availability and sched ule," Curtis said. Concerning the issue of student involvement, Ponting said that the document will be available to stu dents after it has been reviewed by members of the administrative cabi net. “Access to a written descrip tion of what we’re doing will prob ably raise student awareness of the SACS project and probably encour age more student involvement.” The Self Study documents are kept in the Self Study Committee headquarters located on the cor ner of Gorrell and Macon Street next door to the Data Center. Since 1930, Bennett College has achieved high accreditation. In 1957, Bennett became one of the first HBCU's to be admitted into full membership in Southern Association of Colleges and Sec ondary Schools, the former SACS title. Students planning to leave their vehicle on campus during the break have to ask to park their vehicle on the Washington Street lot inside the gate or near the department of pub lic safety. McDougle said, "All students choose not to do this.” Before leaving the campus, resi dents who have concems about broken locks should inform resi dence life directors and the main tenance staff of what needs to be fixed. “Public safety officers will try to get residence life and main tenance [staffs] to follow through on dormitory flaws,” McDougle said. McDougle said he sees no reason to change this policy any time soon. “It’s a procedure that we use.” “College Night” at Putt-Putt Golf & Games every Wed. 7-9 p.m. AYCP Golf/10 Tokens/ $5/ person Valid College I.D.
