Black MEIBstoiT ON THIS DA Y IN OCTOBER .Critic's So rneri reviews & Lost Boyz turn tragedy \previews into triumph with their latest release AftCT the senseless murdCT of groiq) member, Raymond “Freaky Tah” Rogers, UnivCTsal Records’ reigning rap crew from Queens, the Lost Boyz -- comprised of Mr. Cheeks, Pretty Lou and Spigg Nice - have regrouped and are ready to rule with the release of their third project, "LB IV Life." Their first two albums, "Legal Drug Money" (1996) and "Love, Peace & Nappiness" (1997) were both certified gold, establishing the four-man dred squad as the premier party-crew. They’ve released many crowd- pleasing anthems including, "Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz," "Music Makes Me High,” along with the heartfelt tracks “Renee” and “Me & My Crazy Word.” Mr. Cheeks has also made guest appearances on other hit songs such as Queen Pen’s “A Party Ain’t A Party” and 112’s “Come See Me.” Though Freaky Tah died during the initial recording of the album, his presence is still prominent The New York natives deliver a special homage to their hometown in their own distinctly rugged yet ‘round-the- way style. TTie disc is bursting wiA party jams, including “Plug Me In” and “Let’s Roll Dice,” two stand-out cuts showcasing their hard-core hip hop roots. The song “Ghetto Jiggy” is predictable, but it is sure to be a standard at ghetto parties Music Review everywhere. "LB IV Life" is better than I expected. However, the material is rife with standard rap redun dancy. The same old topics of violence, sex, and general mayhem are dominant on the disc. The Lost Boyz could use a breath of fiesh air like a live ' album or a free style session over unusual beats. Have the Lost Boyz reached their creative peak? It seems like it We’ve come to expect the bass-heavy, group tracks they produce and so far they haven’t strayed much from their formula. Though LB IV Life is good, I kind of expected more from them. The Lost Boyz have overcome many obstacles in their life, but the group looked at the recording of LB IV Life as a vehicle to ^ replace a negative with a positive, to turn darkness to light, and death into Ufe. Although I’m sorry about the death of yet another young rap artist, LB also stands for stale. Buy it at a markdown price.
