Monya Tomlinson Editor Bennett Banner gets back on track We’re back; claiming “Never been gone” Sometime last semester, while being asked for the millionth time about the whereabouts of this publication, I had an epiphany. I realized the importance of a voice for the students on this cam pus because every where I went, someone would ask me when the Banner would be com ing out or what was going on. Fall 2000 was somewhat traumatic for my staff and myself — we found ourselves without our guiding force and we were barely functioning. Sadly, The Bennett Banner vanished from the campus tapestry for a full semester! Ironically, it was very encouraging to know that we were missed, because in the past, staff members (includ ing myself) have expressed feeling unappreciated and unmotivat- ed. In hindsight, I look at last semester as a necessary (though poorly timed and unfortunate) break to examine our purpose and ourselves. . ^ i ■ Since the break, we’ve jumped back into the swing of thmgs, and as chief editor, I’m newly motivated to prove that The Bennett Banner is a valuable asset to this institution. As the voice of the student body, we have a responsibility to publish stories our read ers care about. I promise to honor that responsibility. Tamara Phelps, a sophomore mass communications major from Washington, DC, and our colorful new features columnist, puts it best. “If it’s boring, I’m not going to read it.” 1 think many Belles agree with her. That’s why we’re putting you, the Bennett College Community — especially the students — on the spot. Tell us what you think and what you care about. Write it down and put it in Campus Box 25, call us at our new tele phone number — 517-2305, or talk to any staff member to clue us in. Yes, we’re back. We apologize for the absence. We vow to make you forget we ever left. Either way, we know that you’re going to have something to say Students have a place to be heard again, so speak up y’all!
