C., downing all opposition to walk away with the handsome gold trophy awarded annually to the winning team. CHATHAM GIRLS WIN FIRST GAME However, Are Nosed Out In Second Game by Marion Which Was First Defeat of Season The Chatham girls, of Wins ton-Salem, were winners in the opening round of the Southern Textile Basketball Tournament at Greenville, S. C., February 19th, defeating Monogan Mills of Greenville, 35 to 17. However, in their second game with Marion, N. C., they were eliminated, los ing by the score of 27 to 24. In the first game the girls of fered a strong and well-drilled six for the battle, with the two Poole sisters, Babe and Mildred leading the scoring. Rothrock’s brilliant defensive play was a feature. Babe and Mildred Poole, Lelia and Madia Swaim, Prances Rothrock, Madie (Continued On Page Eight) Chatham Blanketeers Win Cage Tournament Chatham Lands 3 On All-Southern An All-Southern basketball team, picked by coaches and sports writers from players participating in the Southern Basketball tournament at Greenville, saw three Chatham players occupying berths. Pied mont and Dunean Mills also landed one berth each. The team was as follows: Emory, forward, Piedmont; H. Hambright, forward, Chatham; Campbell, center, Chatham; Maxwell, guard, Chathamr, Suddeth, guard, Dunean. AWARDED TROPHY Defeat Piedmont 42 to 34 to Take Top Ranking* TEAM IS PRAISED The Chatham Blanketeers won the Southern Textile Basketball Tournament championship Satur day night at Greenville, S. C., by defeating the strong Piedmont team by the score of 42 to 34. With their opponents in the role of favorites, the Blanketeers rose to new heights in both offensive and defensive play to walk off winner. The score at the half stood 17-17, but the Piedmont cagers were unable to withstand the brilliant attack of the Blanke teers, featured by Crater, Ham- bright, Campbell, Maxwell and McBride. The game was witnessed by a crowd of 7,000 including Governor Clin D. Johnson, of South Caro lina. Eighty-one teams from seven Southern states participated in the tournament. In the first game against Peltzer, the Blanketeers, paced by Crater, H. Hambright and Maxwell, led at the half by the score of 29 to 18, running the score up to 53 to 34 at the final gun. In the second game the Blanketeers defeated Judson by a score of 30 to 26. In this game, Crater and H. Hambright led the offensive play with Maxwell, Mc Bride and Campbell outstanding in defensive play.
