Chath am Blanketeer Vol. 5 JANUARY 27, 1939 No. 13 The Real NO ACCIDENT CLUB Here are the charter members of the NO ACCIDENT CLUB. This splendid group of Chatham employees have been here for a total of 237 work years; that is if their time was stretched out for one man it would total that amount. Mr. Neaves is shown here pinning the Chatham Manufacturing Co. NO ACCIDENT SAFETY AWARD on the uniform of our star pupil, “Aunt Mandy” Burcham. “Aunt Mandy” has been here for 47 years, and has rightly earned the title of the most careful person in the Plant. On the left is Lena Hodge, with a 30-year record; Marjorie Finney, 26 years; Jack Freeman, 27 years; Tom Golden, 33 years; Fred Day, 25 years; Clay Burcham, 24 years; Evie Yarboro, 25 years, and Ell Burcham who is' “standing in” for the group that have been with the Company for many years but have suffered a minor accident during the time. “Aunt Mandy” comes next with the record of 47 years. Mr. Neaves is no newcomer to this organization, having been here himself for more than 26 years, and of course without an accident. Safety Campaign Shows Good Results A — A BOUQUET FROM OUR GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Neaves Agreeably Surprised at Decided Reduction in Number of Accidents Since our Safety Campaign started, on July 1st of last year, I have been agreeably surprised at the decided reduction in the number of accidents in our plant. This, I am sure, is due largely to the sincere co-operation of, our employees with their foremen and with each other. Since this campaign started, out of more than twelve hundred employees, we have had only 12 “lost time” accidents, none of which were termed “serious.” There were only 44 accidents that required the attention of a physician, and all but twelve of these returned to their work immediately, and without any lost time. This is a record of which I am justly proud and of which every employee in our plants should be proud. All employees except the above-mentioned 44, at the end of the first six months, received the “No Accident—Safety Award” badge, and we would like very much to see every single em ployee receive this award at the end of the present term. I want to compliment all of the foremen and all of the employees on this excellent record. W. A. NEAVES, Vice President SPECIAL SECTION IN THIS NUMBER Is Devoted Entirely to Safety Work; Fine Work of Cam paign Is Summarized This issue of the' Blanketeer is carrying a special section devoted to Safety work. In this we have tried to summarize the results of the Safety Campaign now enter ing the second six-month period since it was organized and start ed last July first. Splendid results have been achieved, due partly to the meth od of accounting and recording of accidents, and in a greater part, due to the increased Safety consciousness of our fellow em ployees. Much praise is due the diligent workers who have tried to carry out the plans of the or ganization, and have worked faithfully for, and with their fel- (Continued on Page Seven) The Safety Campaign put un der way last July first, has stead ily gained momentum and is pro ducing some excellent results, as shown by a reduction in the num ber of accident cases with their attendant lost time and human suffering. Every employee who has come through these first six months of the campaign without an acci dent has been given an attrac tive badge to wear, which desig nates him as a “Safe Worker.” This badge is his or hers until an accident puts them in the “Black Shdep” fold, and they are no longer entitled to wear it, and be designated as a safe worker. Our nurse, Mrs. Holcomb, is especially proud of the record made during the initial half year of the campaign, and is sure that these next six months will produce even better results. She expects to have very few of our good people drop from the rolls of the Safe Workers. Those who are entitled to wear a badge now, and do not have an accident be tween now and July 1st, next, will receive a higher rating badge showing that they have gone for a year without having an acci dent, and those workers not en titled to a badge now, but do not have another accident between now and July first, will be given their first badge. From July 1st to January 1st we had 44 accident cases that re quired the attention of a doctor, and only 12 of these cases were forced to lose time from their work. The fine spirit of cooperation and interest shown by our peo ple is certainly something to be proud of, and this same spirit is what will bring that total of ac cident cases way down when the time comes to total up and see (Continued on Page Seven)
