Published Monthly at PISGAH FOREST, N. C. Printed by Champagne Job Printing Department. GARDEN HINTS When Winter comes, the gardener’s attention is turned to house plants. Whether you have a single flower or an elab orate indoor garden, these sug gestions may be useful: Soil for house plants should be sandy and contain some leaf- mold in order to insure good drainage. The air inside is usually dry, so sprinkle the leaves occasionally, especially the foilage plants. Too much watering should be avoided. House plants do better in small pots rather than large ones and should be placed close together. Foilage plants are more suc cessful than flowering plants indoors. Ferns, Sanseveria (snake-plant), begonias, cacti, geraniums, Englisn ivy, peri winkle, so-called “air” plants, and the fleshy-leafed succulent plants are a few of the many plants that may be grown suc cessfully indoors. Why not give your gardening friend useful garden tools for Christmas? There are many to choose from and they make lasting gifts. Order your spring seed cata logs now and be ready to make plans for your spring gardens. There are many new plant in troductions that are worthy of trial, not only new flowers but also many new vegetable varie ties. Fruit and ornamental trees may be fertilized any time from nov/ until March. I would not advise fertilizing flowering shrubs until February or March The fertilizer used will depend largely on the type of soil. Examine your dahlia tubers, gladioli corms, and other stored bulbs or roots from time to time through the winter to check on rotting, insects, etc., and pre vent any damage from spread ing. After your Christmas poin- settas have finished blooming, decrease the amount of water and place them in a cool place A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT In the spirit of the Holiday Season, I send Greet ings to all of you! Ecusta is only beginning and, during the coming year, we hope to bring it to completion. I feel it fitting at this Holy Season—when “Peace on earth, good-will towards men” is more needed than ever—to send you a message of gratitude and cheer for the god work and co-operation you have shown, and to thank you all for your assistance in making Ecusta pos sible. I need your help and enthusiasm now more than ever before. You have proven you are capable of good deeds and it has been my ambition, at all times, to do my share. Much has been published about me in newspapers and magazines, but all this v/ould not have been pos sible without your co-operation. My “old friends” in Champagne, Endless and Boucher are, naturally, included in all I have said be fore. I sincerely hope that all of you, in the circle of your dear families, will have a very Merry Christmas, Y/hich I will celebrate with you in spirit, and pray thai many more years will be ahead of us in which all of us can work together in happiness, contentment and prosperity. Sincerely yours, HARRY H. STRAUS President. WEDDINGS of INTEREST Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Lillian Aileen Mahaffey to Ralph Brown on October 27 at Pickens, S. C.
