Ecustans are proud to welcome them and are happy to learn that ar rangements have been made for their guests to see in its entirety the new and beautiful Ecusta plant—the only manufacturer of cigarette paper in America today. 1942 Fire School Report Ecusta was represented at the 1942 session of the North Carolina Fire Col lege and Drill School, which was held in Asheville on June 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, by Messrs. H. F. Finck, Carl Eld- ridge, Lewis Johnson, Tom (Shorty) Hargis, and Luke Harrison. » , The three days and tures and drills were, as usual, tilled with about the most sincere enthus iasm to be found in one group of men. The lectures by Fire Chiefs, Lieuten ants, and Captains of the North Caro lina Departments, from the smallest to the largest, and by other leaders in fire fighting of the nation including Chief Pope of Boston, and North Caro lina’s own wide-awake and dynamic Fire Marshal, Sherwood Brockwell, Conductor of the school, with ques tions, discussions and answers made the lecture course, indeed, one of the Continued on Page 5 Be An All-Day bration At Camp Sapphire On the Fourth of July Ecusta em ployees and their families are ^oing to have the biggest picnic that has ever been held in this part of the country. It will start in the forenoon and last throughout the day and up into the night. Camp Sapphire, which is about half, way between Ecusta and Brevard, has been chosen as an ideal location. It has a lake for swimming, canoeing, fishing and fly casting contests. It ha® a good running track for races, tennis courts, a large flat grassy location for all of the other contests, buildings suit able for square dancing, first aid, checking stations, preparing cold drinks, and large wooded areas for spreading picnic dinners and plenty of parking space. There will be every kind of contest for every member of the family with prizes in Defense Stamps to all win ners. Most of the activities will center around a boxing ring which will also be used for a band stand. Loud speak ers will be located over this so that everyone can be informed as to what is going on. The band will play throughout the day. Entries are coming in fast for Tug of War” teams, boxing matches, square dance band contests, rifle matches, canoe fights, etc. The event that seems to be attract ing more attention than any other is the featured foot race between Wil ber, Denton, Jones and Kappers, in which the winner gets one dollar and Continued on Page 4 President Straus Accepts Hospital; Broughton Speaks Governor J. Melville Broughton de livered the principal address at the dedication of the Transylvania Com munity hospital last Saturday after noon at 2 o’clock, and he was intro duced by President Harry H. Straus of Ecusta, who is chairman of the hos pital board of trustees, and who ac cepted the building for the public.
