JULY, 1943 THE ECHO PAGE NINETEEN Located In Texas PVT. HUGHES MERRILL is now stationed at Camp Wallace, Texas, where he is a fire control operator on an anti-aircraft gun. Pvt. Merrill was employed in Gumming, Champagne when he went to the army. FINISHES SEA DUTY July 5, 1943 Dear Mr. Wells: It looks as though my days at sea are over, and I can’t decide whether to be happy or sad about it. At present I am helium officer, and have charge of helium issued to airships. It is really hot down here and I could easily stand some cool mountain air from Ecusta. I am always glad to get the Echo. Yours sincerely, DAVID PICKLER WRITES TO DAD t>ear Dad, One thing I want to bragg about and that is the food. It is absolute ly delicious and I am looking for ward to each and every meal; and always three servings. Thanks for all the letters; the v/ay you write certainly makes me feel better than most of the boys do, particularly when they get let ters from home pitying them about the tough life they have now, etc. 1 CAN TAKE IT; I wanted this all the time. I got more shots today and can feel it a little bit. This second set of shots usually brings a little temperature and I am going to take it as easy as possible. It is raining and I am in a mess We have two fatigue uniforms and one got soaked this morning; the other one I washed last night and hung it out for drying and it is soaked too. You should see me do niy washing, uniforms and all. The pressing is still a problem, but I am working on a deal now with a fellow, where I am going to wash his uniforms and he is going to press mine. You should see the Way we roll up our underwear, towels, stockings, etc. I know, always kept my room in perfect shape(?!) and after I come home it will be hard for me not to. I saw Speedy Jones several times, even though he is quite a distance from my barracks. He lost about 26 lbs. he says—and he looks it too. Streamlined Speedy! This camp has an officer, I be lieve a Captain, who is officer in charge of safety. They publish records weekly, showing how sol diers get hurt in camp, usually due to carelessness and what they call “Playing but not playing safe.” This applies particularly to acci dents on the athletic field.
