PAGE SIX THE ECHO AUGUST, 1943 News And Gossip From Our Various Departments Camera Tells An Interesting Story At the annual picnic, ftupi. Jtaymona Bennett matte some of the best pictures that were taken of this big event and here’s where he was supposed to be getting a close-up view of the pie-eating contest. There is some doubt about his intentions, however. Per sons standing nearby contend that he got up close so that he might slip one of the pies into his packet. I Snooping Around i The Office i . —By—, I i Sniff and Snoop i QiiMiiiiiniiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiii Q Everybody in the Main Office sure is getting a handsome “brown ing—for what?” as Robert Bench- ley says. Charles Dunlop—in the Bond Department—is sporting a sweet lir tan (even the “top” of his head). We welcome a new member to the Payroll Department — “Pat’ Hodson, formerly having bestowed her sweet smile upon the Finish ing Department. Well, we’ve given up another office boy to do his bit for “Uncle!!” Harold Brown is in the navy now. Ruby, Ruth and Ted received a letter from him. He seems to be very happy up in Great Lakes, 111., learning to be a sailor boy. Now we see Jimmy Hammond running the mail. He hails from down Hendersonville way. “Flea” sure does hop around these days! Wonder why in the world Highlands let her go. We certainly wouldn’t! The personnel office surely has an added attraction. Ruth Hooper is the new girl in that office. Ruth is from Mills River. She comes to us from Woman’s College of U. N. C. The Main Office boasts of an other attractive new member — Margaret Snead from Anderson, S. C., who went to Brevard Col lege, is with us now. Soo—We’re going to see another blushing gal waltz down the aisle of matrimony. Much happiness, Katherine (English)! We heard that Dot Hunter and Lita Steppe threw an exciting little shindig for her on a certain Saturday night. First one and then the other; we suppose that “Tootsie” John son ■will be the next one to tie the knot. She is showing off a twinkling stone on that certain little finger too. Good luck! Reba Russell is getting to be well known as “The One Man Investigator.” We wonder what has come over Mildred C. lately. She’s a changed person — maybe Lucile R. could help solve the mystery. What about it, Lucile? Jimmie Glanville, formerly in our Traffic Department, spent a short furlough in Asheville recent ly. He has now returned to Fort Mason, San Francisco. Sorry you didn’t get out to see us, Jimmie, as we were looking for you. Squire Millner has returned from a vaca tion spent with his son, Pryor, in Danville, Va. He reports a swell time but says these mountains look pretty good to him. Jim Jones, a recent addition to our Purchasing Department, had as his guest last week, Mrs. E. J. Connor of Pittsburgh, Pa. He also has been entertaining his parents this week. With his working out bus and train schedules it looked for awhile like Jim was in the Traffic Department. When visiting incapacitated friends in hospitals, it seems that Bob Johnson always has trouble getting out of the hospital him self. Wonder why? How about it, Bob? Little Audrey says she is really leaving this time. She is deserting us to make the folks happy down Salisbury way. Harvey Souther spent a few days with his brother in Shreve port, La., as a part of his vacation, and on return stopped off to Physical Testing Lab. Congratulations to those from the Physical Lab. who made such a swell appearance with the Ecusta square dance team at the folk festival in Asheville. Those from the lab. who were members of the team were Gladys Teague, Mil dred Talley and Lillian Houston. Nice going, girls! Those of us who were at the square dance in the cafeteria Thursday night saw what you could do. To those from the Physical Lab. who are in the chorus. They are* Naomi Ashe, Annie Lou Hamlin, Mary Sue Jennings and Edna Earle Nanney. The chorus made their debut at the square dance and it was splendid/ And a special congratulatory message to our Physical Lab. men in the service: To First Lt. William B. Long, who was awarded the army Air Medal in recognition of courageous service to his combat organiza tion, his fellow American airmen, his country and his home! To Lt. Ernest L. (Roy) Mc- Clintock, U.S.N.R., who was pre sented the air medal for meri torious achievement in aerial ac tion against ememy forces while serving in the Solomon Islands area. To Pvt. Randall Lankford, who is now an instructor at Fort Moul trie, S. C., and who is also the father of a son, born July 29. Glad to see First Lt. Charlie Cook in town. He is operations officer at an aerial gunnery school. And to all the other lab. men who are doing such a swell job for your country and ours, a very special message. We are proud of you everyone. We want to hear from you. So keep us posted. And so long until next month. to see a sister in Gadsden, Ala., which we understand is close by where Stephens hails from. Muriel Filkins is all in a twitter about going “home” to Jersey and New York. We are missing you. Lib Holt, hurry back. We are sorry you are sick. BUY WAR BONDS AND STAMPS GUMMING NEWS This is no “Advice to the Love lorn” column or “Up to the Min ute War News” bulletin. Yes, you guessed it, folks, this is your old friend a’gabbin atcha from the Gumming and Repse Depart ment. Speaking of the Repse Depart ment, we have a new operator on No. 2 machine. The “Deacon,” or better known as “Preston,” seems to be doing a good job. Just keep your chin up, Preston, you don’t have that many breaks in every roll. By the way, when are you having your next dance? I heard you had quite a time at Saluda and Osceola. Staff Sergt. John Reid, who was operator on the gumming machine before leaving for the army last October, and his brother, Pfc. Lee Reid, visited us July 16. Goode Loftis enjoyed a vacation the past week. What is this I hear about Evelyn B. wanting her va cation next week? O, she just wanted to take a little trip! We are really glad to see Bill back and we are all glad to get back. We hope you had a nice va cation, Bill. We did!!! That sure was tough about you not catching a thing at Green River. Better luck next time! Believe me, we sure have miss ed our “Ducks” but enjoyed the company of their subs, Ed and Violet. Sure are glad to see Helen and Frank back. We have missed all those queer noises in here, I have heard of a sun blister but never have I heard of a moon light blister, Christine and Wil ma say they enjoy the moonlight swims much better than sunlight swims. The moon seems to have more appeal, or is it the captains? Looks like Mitch prefers blondes to brunettes. Why the sudden change, Mitch? I was just wondering why all the empty cigar boxes were around the desk. Wondering, too, why the big, happy grin on Chris Rogers’ face. Yes, he just had a new ad dition to his family Sunday night. It was a girl, too! If anybody wants to give Julia M. a gift, here’s a tip: She is high ly fond of perfumed lotion. Speaking of gifts, is everyone in favor of giving Phil a heating pad Machine Room News, Views And Poetry By John Goolsby, Reporter ()n August 1st that old bird that delivers all those bundles from heaven, gently dipped his wings and landed at the home of Earl Frady and left 8V2 lbs. of sun shine, name of William Edward Frady. Earl has a child born every day in the week with the excep tion of Monday and Tuesday—so he tells me. Some record, eh? Earl works on No. 8 Machine. Love is like a poker game—she gets a flush, he shows diamonds, and it ends with a full house. Elmore (Dutch) Eisele has re turned from his much earned va cation and reports a wonderful time visiting friends and relatives from New York to Miami. Wife: The new maid has burn ed the bacon and eggs, darling. Wouldn’t you be satisfied with a couple of kisses for breakfast? Husband: Sure, bring her in. Some of the boys seem to think we have some real track team tim ber in the Machine Room. If this machine tender goes out for the team, odds are ten to one, he will make All-American. — (See Bob Pearce for particulars.) On August 4, Jimmy Jones, Machine Tender, on No. 7 became the proud father of a baby boy, name—Larry Jones. God fook the blush of the morn ing And the sheen of an oriental pearl He caught the coo of a humming dove And the white of a lily’s curl Then He took the blue of the Iris And the scent off a virgin’s hair And cuddling them in His great white band Lo! A baby nestled there —ANON Robert Davis, Gilbert Coan, Ed McCall have joined 506 of their comrades from Ecusta, who have gone before to preserve life, lib erty and happiness for us all. When these boys pull the trigger, Hitler count your “chillun.” Arnold Williams has returned from his vacation with about ten pounds more weight and a good sun-tan. He says he is now ready to buckle down for another year. Two of our former boys from the Machine Room are back on leave, Leo Reid, 2nd Class Store keeper from the Navy, and Pfc. Joe Jones from the Army. Wel come boys! We are glad to have you back. Folks, the only way I have to get news is from YOU. Bring it in. I cannot tell how the truth will be, I say the tale as ’twas told to me. ^NON for those “cold feet?” Since a recent visit of a certain soldier, Tulen D. has transferred her affection from the navy to the army. Wonder why? Well, folks, that is all the news I can gather at this time so I will sign off and say “au re voir” until next month. I’ll be seeing you more often now. The boy friend has gone back to camp. Handsome: Can you read my mind? Beautiful: Yes. Handsome: Go ahead. Beautiful: No, you go aheadi ■ t
