GOOLSBY CATCHES
200-POUND DEER
Stops Taxi En Route To
Work And Goes After Buck
With Rock And Stick
Believe-it-or-not, John Goolsby,
jolly foreman of the Machine
Room, caught a 200-pound, 6-point
buck Friday morning en route to
work, and he caught it easier than
most people can catch a chicken!
Of course John had a little help,
but old Daniel Boone himself
probably couldn’t and wouldn’t
have done as well as John did.
Riding to work in a taxi about
10 o’clock Friday morning John
was aroused when a large buck
ran across the road just in front
of the car right out here near the
plant.
“Hey, stop this thing and let’s
get that animal!” John yelled to
the driver.
Before the car stopped rolling,
the agile Machine Room foreman
was out, right after the deer'which
had plunged into a fence.
“I almost got him there, but he
jumped the fence and landed in
side of an inclosed chicken yard,”
he proudly declared as his knees
trembled unsteadily.
Heavily and modernly armed
with a rock and a rotten piece of
2x4, John dashed into the chicken
yard, right after the wild beast.
Just like a lion tamer, John pur
sued the fast-charging buck at
close quarters and delivered many
telling blows until finally the deer
stuck his horns through the fence
and John W. Montieth, who lives
at the scene of the big arena,
grabbed them, and held tight until
John could borrow an old 22 rifle.

Cigarette And Paper
Men Praise Ecusta
The Ecusta plant, management
and employees were highly prais
ed by two outstanding men who
visited us recently. They were W.
J. Hailey, vice president and treas
urer of P. Lorillard and company
and S. G. Blankenship, president
of the American Pulp and Paper
Mill Superintendents association
and production manager of the
Port Royal Pulp and Paper com
pany, Ltd., of New York City.
“I can easily understand why
the cigarette paper w^e buy from
Ecusta is of such fine, high qual
ity,” Mr. Hailey said after visiting
the plant. “It’s one of the finest
and best plants I have ever seen
and every one seems to be work
ing in complete harmony.” He
stated that Mr. Straus and Ecusta
have saved the cigarette industry.
“Why, it’s the finest paper mill
in America,” Mr. Blankenship as
serted.
Here’s Proof Of That Big Deer Story!
To All Employees
On behalf of, and in thei name of, the employees of Ecusta
Paper Corporation, Champagne Paper Corporation and Endless
Belt Corporation, we have presented a check for $4,000.00 to
the United War Fund, and a check for $1,000.00 to the Tran
sylvania County Community Chest, for their 1943-44 require-
ments.
In view of the Third War Loan Drive in October, and the
recent War Fund Drive, no Community Chest Campaign has
been conducted. Many War Fund Drive contributors have,
however, spwified that a part of their donation be transferred
to the Transylvania Community Chest.
The United^ War Fund Drive, made this year for the first
time, was a joint appeal for funds on behalf of 17 separate
war agencies, including U.S.O., United Seamen’s Service, War
Prisoners Aid and various Allied and Occupied countries Relief
Agencies.
In making this presentation, we have specified to the Chair
men of both of these drives that these donations arei given in
the name of all of those who work for the above companies,
and, therefore, no personal solicitations should be made among
you.
We, are very happy to have been able to make this arrange
ment and know that all of you will be pleased because you have
thereby become a contributor to these worthy causes.
HARRY H. STRAUS,
President.
The Echo editors were skeptical, too. They had heard about
men bitmg dogs, which makes news, but they hadn’t heard of a
deer being “caught”, so they investigated and sure enough, the
strange story was found to be true! Standing on the right is
John W. Montieth and on the left, the deer-catcher, John Goolsby!
