Highlight Of Day Was Pres

Security Award.
Approximately 4000 Ecusta em
ployees and their families attended
the big Fourth of July picnic at
Camp Sapphire. This was probably
the largest crowd ever to attend
one of our picnics. They came ear
ly and stayed all day enjoying the
many games and contests arrang
ed for them.
^ The weather was perfect and the
festivities started off about 10 a.m.
and lasted throughout the day. A
full program of entertainment was
enjoyed by all those attending,
featuring many different kinds of
contests conducted for youngsters
and grownups with war stamps as
prizes. There were also boxing
bouts, rifle matches, greasy pole
climbing, fly-casting, and tug-of-
war. A girls’ softball game, in
which the Champagne girls defeat
ed the Champion Paper girls, was
a special feature of the day.
The Band played throughout the
day and the picnic came to a suc
cessful conclusion with a street
dance in Brevard. Hundreds of
people attended the dance; the
Ecusta string band furnished the
music and Red Wood was caller.
Highlighting the day’s activities
were addresses by Mr. Harry H.
Straus and Gov. J. M. Broughton
and the presentation of the coveted

Plans are now being given seri
ous consideration by the Activities
Committee to sponsor a program
of providing free musical instruc
tion for children of all Ecusta em
ployees, it was learned this week.
During the past several months,
various employees have expressed a
desire to see such a proposed proj
ect established so that their chil
dren could study music.
An investigation made by the
Activities Committee discloses that
only a limited amount of musical
instruction ig available in the com
munity and it is believed by this
Committee that the Recreational
Department could render a real
service to Ecusta children by giv
ing them an opportunity to study
various musical instruments.
The program, if put into opera
tion, would be under th^ supervis-

America and our Allies, and the
need of all our workers to stay on

In addition to the regular show

cafeteria on Friday afternoon while
the employees were receiving their
