E. NEWBURY It is very pleasing to note that the frequency of personal injuries at Ecusta is much lower for the first nine months of 1945, as com pared with the same period last year. The frequency rate is 3.2 at present, as against 10.1 through September of 1944 (this is based on the number of lost time accidents per million manhours worked). The entire personnel is to be congratulated for taking part in such an improvement, and our ex perience proves that It Can Be Done. Accidents don’t just HAP PEN—They are CAUSED—and personal injuries can be eliminat ed by THINKING. We must remember that it’s just as easy to do things the Safe way, as it is to do them the Unsafe way. Resolve now to make SAFE TY a HABIT so that you will live longer and suffer less. Injuries Should Be Treated Immediately Here at Ecusta, Champagne and Endless Belt, numerous minor in juries are being reported from one to seven days after they oc cur. This is a very bad habit, as infections are dangerous and fre quently occur when injuries are not treated immediately. The First Aid station is open 24 hours a day and the nurse on duty will be only too glad to give proper treatment to even the slightest scratch or abrasion. You owe it to yourself to take advan tage of this service, for after all, the person who gats injured is the one who loses and suffers most. \ Pilot Plant News By HARRY S. KOLMAN Here we are back again after a long absence. We welcome Staff Sergeant David Sams, of the U. S. Air force who was a P. W. in the European theatre, and Lt. Charles Glazener of the U. S. Word, Vice President Ecusta Paper Corp., Pisgah Forest, N. C. Dear Sir: I have been advised by the Sec retary of Labor, Honorable L. B. Schwellenbach, that your plant has won the Certificate of Safety A.chievement for the first six months of 1945 by virtue of the remarkable record you have made in the reduction of accidents. I sincerely congratulate you upon this achievement, and I feel that it must be most gratifying to| you and to your very fine organi zation. With best wishes, I am Yours very truly, Clyde R. Hoey. October 16, 1945. Mr. T. N. Word, Vice President, The Ecusta Paper Corp., Pisgah Forest, N. C. Dear Mr. Word: I am advised by Hon. L, B. Schwellenbach, Secretary of Labor, that your company has qualified for the Labor Department’s Certificate of Safety Achievement. I wish to commend you upon the reduc tion of accident frequency rate at your plant during the past few months and assure you of my in terest in the splendid record be ing made by your company in this particular. Sincerely yours, Zebulon Weaver. Victory Loan Is (Continued Frovi Page One) said the Chinese were charging 200,000 yuan for taking a person for a ride in a rickshaw, the 2- wheeled carts they use for taxi cabs. This, of course, made it im possible for anyone to ride ex cept an American serviceman. The money is of little value because a bottle of beer costs 110,000 yuans and if you go to a nightclub it costs 160,000 yuans per hour to have a hostess sit with you at the table and 135,000 yuans for each small glass of tea &he drinks. Let’s buy Victory Bonds and keep our money until materials are more plentiful and do our par^ to keep down inflation.
