IF YOU ARE CHINESE These two oddities can be read either forward or backward: “Name no one man.” and “Snug and raw was 1 ere I saw war and guns,” Smokey Says: GOING- CATCH TIME. Forty per cent of Southern woods fires are caused by incendi arism. Heedless woods burning costs the South millions each year in damage to timber and seedlings. Meet Smokey This month’s edition of The Echo introduces “SMOKEY”, an amiable cartoon bear, with a wise and timely forest fire prevention message. This inimitable charac ter, wearing trousers and a forest ranger’s hat will present to our readers a monthly message on forest conservation and protec tion. The importance of forests for providing lumber and other woods products has never been better recognized than today. The need for thousands of homes, increased paper output and other products is urgent. Growing trees to meet these demands, and to provide work for local labor in this community, will require protection from fire and mismanagement. “SMOKEY’S” little reminderrs will help bring these thoughts home to us. Our readers will have an opportunity to make sugges tions for drawings and sayings for future “SMOKEY SAYS.” If you have an idea to suggest, submit it to Ernest Burch, Fire Inspector. Any suggestions made by our read ers and used by “SMOKEY” will be credited to the person submit? ting the idea,
