PAGE EIGHT THE ECHO October, 1946 Camp Sapphire Has Successful Season MORE THAN 20,000 VISITORS AT CAMP DURING SUMMER Camp Sapphire, our new em ployee recreation play ground, has just completed a very successful season. Many improvements were made prior to the opening of the camp season last June and facili ties were established for many types of recreational activities. It has been estimated that more than 20,000 Ecustans, their fam ilies and friends visited the camp during the summer. The picnic facilities were greatly expanded providing many areas for family groups to prepare and serve their picnic lunches. Also, the swim ming area was thoroughly recon ditioned and cleaned and a coat of sand was placed on the bottom of the lake before it was opened for swimming. Many activities were carried on during the siunmer including scheduled softball games; exhibi tion in swimming and life saving ' by the American Red Cross Aquait ic school; a six-week boys’ coach ing school in sports; the canteen was open with soft drinks, sand wiches, candy and ice cream available; swimming instruction was given; and play ground facili ties provided for children with a full time supervisor in charge. Beginning as of June 2, every Sunday during the summer was designated as “Family Day” and on these days special entertain ment was provided including ten nis matches, ball games, swimming and diving exhibitions, movies, music, etc. Adequate equipment for all kinds of sports was available at all times. Ecusta’s big annual Fourth of July Picnic was again held here with between 5,000 or 6,000 people attending. Also, several depart mental barbecues and picnic sup pers were served there. Last year the lake was stocked with small fish and since their growth was much greater than had been hoped for, it was decided to open the lake to all employees for fishing on August 1st on a lim ited basis.
