Camp Sapphire Has Successful Season
MORE THAN 20,000
VISITORS AT CAMP
DURING SUMMER
Camp Sapphire, our new em
ployee recreation play ground, has
just completed a very successful
season. Many improvements were
made prior to the opening of the
camp season last June and facili
ties were established for many
types of recreational activities.
It has been estimated that more
than 20,000 Ecustans, their fam
ilies and friends visited the camp
during the summer. The picnic
facilities were greatly expanded
providing many areas for family
groups to prepare and serve their
picnic lunches. Also, the swim
ming area was thoroughly recon
ditioned and cleaned and a coat
of sand was placed on the bottom
of the lake before it was opened
for swimming.
Many activities were carried on
during the siunmer including
scheduled softball games; exhibi
tion in swimming and life saving
' by the American Red Cross Aquait
ic school; a six-week boys’ coach
ing school in sports; the canteen
was open with soft drinks, sand
wiches, candy and ice cream
available; swimming instruction
was given; and play ground facili
ties provided for children with a
full time supervisor in charge.
Beginning as of June 2, every
Sunday during the summer was
designated as “Family Day” and
on these days special entertain
ment was provided including ten
nis matches, ball games, swimming
and diving exhibitions, movies,
music, etc.
Adequate equipment for all
kinds of sports was available at
all times.
Ecusta’s big annual Fourth of
July Picnic was again held here
with between 5,000 or 6,000 people
attending. Also, several depart
mental barbecues and picnic sup
pers were served there.
Last year the lake was stocked
with small fish and since their
growth was much greater than had
been hoped for, it was decided to
open the lake to all employees for
fishing on August 1st on a lim
ited basis.

More than a billion coffee trees

eighteen pounds.
When you speak of having a

meaning literally “from beard to

The largest masonry structure
ever erected by man is the Grand
Coulee Dam on the Columbia river.
The dam is seven times as big as
the Cheops Pyramid in Egypt. Its
spillway can form a waterfall five
times the average flow of Niagara
and three times as high.
There are several good five-
cent cigars on the market, but they
are sold at higher prices.
WIFELY REBUKE
The aggressive wife of a meek
little man was taking her husband
apart one day. While she was rav
ing at him, the doorbell rang and
some friends came to visit them.
The little husband sat in de
jected silence and listened to his
wife and friends talk.
Suddenly, during a lull in the
conversation, his wife glared across
at him and shouted, “And don’t
sit there making fists at me in your
pockets, either!”
Don’t wait until its’s too late to
practice safety.
