BOB ANDERS AND ED LOFTIS WIN
DOUBLES IN PING PONG TOURNEY
The first annual ping pong tournament, spon
sored by the Ecusta Ping Pong Club and held at
Camp Sapphire, Sunday, August 29, was a great
success, attracting more than 30 entries from this
section of the state.
Bob Anders and Ed Loftis, both of the Mill
Office, saw to it that Ecusta brought home its
share of the beautiful trophies, winning the
doubles title. Buddy Oates, well-known athlete
and native of this county now living in Asheville,
waded through some stiff opposition to take the
singles crown.
Walter Straus went to the semi-finals in the
singles, losing to Jim Dillard in a tough match
which saw the winner finish the final game with
a volley of shots that overtook the 18-14 lead
Straus had at that time. Oates took Dillard in the
finals in straight games, 21-11; 21-14; 21-11.
GENERALS RACE IN WITH INTER
DEPARTMENTAL BASEBALL TITLE
The darkhorse General team, playing airtight
ball down the home stretch, captured the title in
the Interdepartmental Baseball League by whip
ping Machine Room in a playoff game by a
score of 8-7.
The two teams ended the regular season in a
tie and a playoff tilt was necessary.
Taking an early 4-0 lead, the Machine Room
boys looked as if they were well on the way to
regaining the title they held in 1946. When
the margin was stretched to 7-2, the Generals
started to work. Two runs in both the fourth and
fifth innings brought the count to 7-6, but in the
top half of the seventh 'Footsie' Case led off with
a lon^ triple. He was cut off at the plate, how
ever, and the side was retired without any scoring.
The last half of the seventh proved fatal to the
Machinemen. Jack Alexander started the rally
wuth a single and Hank Newbury moved him to
second with a nice sacrifice. Marse Grant then
tripled to score Alexander with the tying run, and
scored the winning run a moment later on Mar
shall Loftis’ fly to centerfield.
Leading the batting attack for the winners
was Grant with two doubles and a triple, scoring
three runs. Fred Miller had three for four for
the losers. Both pitchers—^Jim Winget for the
winners and Wilson Gregory for the losers—•
hurled commendably.
