N. C. OPENER Harry H. Straus, Jr. opened Ecusta’s 1950 home stand of the Western North Carolina Industrial Baseball League, in making the initial pitch of the game, between Ecusta and Hazelwood, on Saturday afternoon. May 29th. Ecusta opened the 1950 season at Berkeley on Saturday, May 22 nd, with the Berkeley team winning by a score of 16 to 2. In the opening home game with the Hazelwood nine, it looked as though our Ecusta team might taste the fruits of victory. However, the Hazel wood nine squelched a two run rally in the last of the ninth inning leaving the tieing and win ning runs stranded on second and third base. Ecusta came through with its best game of the season thus far, as they outhit the Hazelwood team but failed to make the needed runs to win. Beacon won the third encounter on Saturday, May 6th, at Beacon by a score of 14 to 4. Although our Ecusta team failed to break into the win column again on Saturday, May 13 th, against the Martel nine, losing by a score of 7 to 4, the team showed much improvement over the previous Saturday’s game. It looks as though the team will break loose and play the brand of baseball they are capable of in the very near future. In past years Ecusta has always experienced a slow start in all of its opening games and this year’s team is no exception. It appears that the other industrial teams can always muster their top strength at the beginning of the season, whereas, the Ecusta team tends to grow stronger on each successive Saturday. Now that the team personnel is more settled, the club should start to click with regularity. If the pattern runs true to form, Ecusta base ball fans can get ready for a double dose of thrills when the Ecusta team tangles with the potent Enka nine in a double header on Sat urday, May 27th, at Camp Sapphire. Interdepartmental base hits: Lee M. Bauer made the initial pitch to open the 1950 baseball season of Ecusta’s Interdepartmental Baseball League, on Monday afternoon. May 8th. League play was scheduled to get under way Monday, May 1st, however, due to rain and wet grounds the opening was delayed a week. In the opening game of the 1950 season the 20
