"OFFICE BITS" By Howard Schmidt Most folks don’t know this, but one of our force is harboring the future Heavy Weight Champion of the world in their home. That’s right! Mar guerite Thompson’s son Wriston reached the finals of the boxing tournament held by the Gibbons Hall School for Boys in Asheville. Better keep feeding him that steak, Marguerite. Lehman Kapp finally decided to get rid of that Oil Hungry Buick of his and get a brand new Buick. When last heard of he was claiming 20 miles to the gallon instead of oil as he used to. Other folks have also succumbed to the new car Itch. Buck Best and John Holbrook worked up a deal. John bought Buck’s old Chevy and Buck got a good-looking green Buick. Edith Summey is driving a new Oldsmobile around now. She is getting ready for that trip to Georgia in the fall when hubby goes back to school. Ruth Shepherd not only has a new Pontiac but is dreaming of some housing units in Hendersonville. Oh yes, Eunice Waldrop has finally worked up the list of used cars until she and Fritz have a good-look ing ’49 Ford. Some folks didn’t get the new car rash but they got a craze for the new Capehart Radio, Dave Marder, R. G. Deyton, and Jim Curwen recently bought new sets and each one is tickled pink with it. You didn’t get a new car or a new radio; well then you must be one who is all excited about a new home. Sure is a lot of talk about who is building what and when they are moving in. Mattie Whitmire and her husband have a new home on the Boylston highway. Katherine Kirk, Harry Straus, Jr., Roger King all have homes in various stages of building, and Buck Best, Jim Curwen, Carl Stephens all are in the planning stage. Hope we have a lot of Housewarmings. Sure looks good to see all that activity on the Cellophane site. Phil Brownell and N. H. Col- lison recently had an opportunity to visit Clinton, Iowa and see how Cellophane was made. Mr. Straus and Mr. Word recently returned from a trip to California and reported a very pleasant trip. Ludwig Straus has returned from a visit to Europe where he saw many of his relatives. Said he had a good trip, but was certainly glad to be back in Pisgah Forest. Certainly glad to see Thelma Alexander back with us, even though she will only be with us temporarily. We also welcome some new faces. Hester Eskridge is secretary to N. H. Collisson and Gena English is secretary to Pete Eberle. Hope you can put up with us. We also welcome the new future Ecustans, that is the new infants of Gaynard Morgan, who became a "poppa” for the first time, and of Harry Byers, who is an old hand at being a father. There sure were a lot of vacationers, too long to write up but will report a few. Norman Ponder went to New York and saw his first Major League Baseball Game, said he was thrilled in every inning. Katherine Kirk had the thrill of "Playing the Ponies” at Hialeah Park. Bob John son, "Jimmy” Duckworth, Ed Garrett, and Isabella Palais also soaked up the sun on various beaches in Florida. Alice Finn soaked up some "Old World” atmosphere in New Orleans, John Hol brook went to Raleigh for a week and said he visited old acquaintances. Didn’t say whether they were male or female, but had a good time, L. F. Dixon returned from a business trip to El Centro. He came back with flax seed in his hair and said the heat was only 90°. Others of our force who vacationed wouldn’t supply me with details, so I assume they stayed home and caught up on their sleep. Elliott Bickett took son, Donnie, to New York and the specialist there said Donnie was very much improved. We are glad to hear that. Larry Bryant is showing everyone that picture of his son, Dick, in Uncle Sam’s uniform. Dick recently enlisted in the Paratroops. He hasn’t jumped yet but is looking forward to it. Oh yes! Almost forgot—"Our Gladiola King,” Charles Cook, has a new tractor and several new fields this summer. It is rumored that he is going to supply the office with free glads this summer. STOREROOM NEWS By Jim Bradley Most of the Storeroom fellows are gardening and also doing some fishing. It seems as if the fishing fever has attacked several of them. Ollie Taylor reports several nice catches. Jim Bradley •also rook home a good catch recently. Since Gene Stepp left the Storeroom Felix Weese is without a fishing partner, and cannot seem to fish by himself. Dick Allen has a new fishing method. His idea is to put so many angle worms on his hook they will choke the fish to death. All the other fisher men in our department plan a trip at an early date, and they are determined to try to break the record. Some of the boys are already taking their vaca tions Dick Allen has been on the sick list. He went to Winston-Salem Hospital for a check-up and now he is taking his vacation. Here’s hoping when he returns he will be much improved. It looks very much like things have started in a big way on the Cellophane plant. 27
