DEPARTMENTAL NEWS ACROSS THE TRACKS By Betty Brown We were all deeply sad dened by the death of Mr. Straus, our beloved President and friend. His memory will remain in our hearts for many years to come. We are happy to have Mr. Hanes with us and know that under his able leadership Ecusta shall continue to succeed as in the past. Well, it seems like several in the Research De partment have been in a buying mood lately. Bud Taylor, Charles Glazener, and Pete Muff at are all sporting new cars. They don’t seem to agree on the make. Bud has a Studebaker, Charles a Chevro let and Pete a Ford. Pete says the most surprising thing about all this is the fact that his is a "Ford” and it runs just like the others. Joe Schlosser and his family are enjoying their new television set, but I believe Dr. Levy is more excited about his recent purchase than anyone else. He has bought a farm, and by the way, Dr. Levy if you need a mule, I suggest you contact Jim Brennan. Hilda Hunnicutt is all smiles. Her brother, George, is home on a 30-day leave from the Navy. He brought along with him some lovely gifts for her from Japan. We wer^ very sorry to lose Pauline Huskins from our office staff, but wish to extend a warm welcome to Mary Jane McCall who has taken her place. The C. L. Dickson’s had as their guests during the Easter Holidays, Mrs. Dickson’s parents from Concord, N. C. Gus Grose underwent an operation recently at Moore General, but I am glad to report he is back on the job and feeling fine. At present Herbert Webb is out due to illness. We wish him a speedy recovery. John Goldberger and Martha Sellers have been on a mineral hunt again. This time to Spruce Pine and vicinity. John reports they found two new minerals with odd names, "Suicide” and "Stick- Tight.” He says the latter certainly is true to its name—he still can’t get it out of his pocket. "What would I get,” inquired the man who had just insured his property against fire, "if this build ing would burn down tonight?” "I should say,” replied the insurance agent, "about ten years.” CHAMPAGNE MACHINE SHOP By James R. Poteet This is April 11th, and we have all been looking for an early spring to break the long cold winter, but only yester day morning as we were on our way to work, we saw the mountains covered with snow and this morning the fields were white with frost. We will surely enjoy a long warm summer, so that we will be able to catch up with our fuel bills for the past winter. For the news from the fellows in the shop, for the past few weeks we have all been working in such a rush that we haven’t had time to get any news together. However, last Saturday Alfred (Cockrobin) Cheek said he thought he was going to have to start back on Hadacol as he was about to go blind with pink eyes. D. C. Landreth was out Saturday on account of the illness of his brother- in-law. Fernando Jones is talking of purchasing a new car. Ector Capps has returned from Clinton, and is at work on his new job in the Cellophane plant. We will try to have more news for next month. PRINTING DEPARTMENT By Julius Tinsley With spring almost here, most of the fellows are talk ing about the garden they ex pect to have this year, the fishing trip they expect to take just as soon as the season opens, or the beginning of baseball practice. Speaking of baseball, we are proud of the part Troy Drake plays in the Ecusta baseball league each year. We believe the reason John McCall "bought a new Hotpoint Range recently was so he could have more time to spend fishing; right John? Ernest Smith has traded his ’41 Plymouth for a ’48 Chevrolet Fleetline. Ernest said the Plymouth was too low on the ground especially when they were laying the new water line on Carolina Ave nue. They did appreciate you helping keep the street dragged out smooth with the bottom of your Plymouth though, Ernest. I believe Lawrence Fisher plans to spend more time fishing this summer too, because he has bought a new power lawn mower. He may even go so far as to think his wife might cut the grass. 22
