STUDENT OFFICERS ARE ELECTED
A-B Enrollmenf'
Totals 307 For
Fall Semester
By Monty Du Puy
When the “old school ' opened
its doors to the inpouring students
for the 1947-’48 semester, every
hope of the faculty and staff was
fufilled. Dr. Bushey, the newly
elected president, revealed that he
anticipated an approximate en
rollment of 300 students. This an
ticipation was extremely close,
since there are 307 now registered
and attending daily. This is quite
an increase over last year’s stu
dent body, as the number has
risen 65 from the previous enroll
ment of last semester’s two hun
dred two.
ACCORDING to Dr. Bushey,
slightly over 50 per cent of the
present enrollment is composed of
servicemen who are taking advan
tage of the opportunities offered
them through the G. I. Bill of
Rights and are finding Biltmore
well suited to their requirements.
Biltmore has seen many hous
ings since its original opening m
the Biltmore High School build
ing slightly less than 20 years ago.
From there it was moved into
part of the Lee H. Edwards High
School, and from there into one
of the buildings which was hous
ing the old Asheville Normal on
their grounds just off Biltmore
Avenue. After leaving that loca
tion it was transferred to the Da
vid Millard Junior High School
and then to the present grounds
on Merrimon Avenue.
When Biltmore first began ope
rations in its new setting there
were nearly one hundred on the
student roll and fourteen the total
number in the faculty. Yes, Bilt
more has come a long way in its
twenty years of accomplishments
and everyone is pulling this sem
ester right onto the top of the list.
Soon able to expand into the new
building now under construction
on the compus, the school is pre
pared to serve all those who enter
in the best way possible and put
the name of “Biltmore” in the top
bracket of educational institutions.

John Giezentanner was elected
president of the debating society
recently organized at the college
at the first meeting of the group
held last week.
Other officers are Noah Stewart,
vice-president; Lucy Woodberry,
secretary, and Kenneth Bailey,
social chairman.
The group is contacting various
junior colleges in this area to ar
range debates. The first debate
is scheduled for the first week in
December with Mars Hill.
REVIEW BOARD
IS ORGANIZED
BY PRESIDENT
By Joe Morris
Stressing the need for continued
school spirit and outlining plans
for the establishment of student
personnel board, Glenn Bushey,
president, held his first news con
ference last week.
Dr. Bushey reiterated his former
request for student participation
in varied activities. “If a college
is to grow in the mutual benefit of
the student and society, there
must be a definite element of
school spirit on the part of eacti
student,” the president said.
THE STUDENT personnel board
is something new here at Ashe-
ville-Biltmore. Composed of Mr.
Hanaman, Mrs. Serota, and Dr.
Bushey, the board will interview
cases of infractions of rules of
conduct. Under present plans, an
offender will be placed on proba
tion for a period of time and in
the event of a second offense, ex
pulsion will be recommended by
the board.
Another function of the board
will be to see that a “C” average
is maintained by all students. If
a student fails to make a “C”
average by the end of the first
quarter, he will be placed on pro
bation. An undesirable average
at the end of the second quarter
will result in the expulsion of the
student.
Name Contest
On For School
Scandal Sheet
What’s a school without a
newspaper and what’s a news
paper without a name?
Mrs. Godwin’s journalism
class is furnishing the news
paper, and now it’s up to you,
the student body to furnish the
name.
IN ADDITION to handing
down a title that will be car
ried on this twice-a-month pub
lication for years to come, a
prize of $5 in hard cash has
been offered to the successful
contestant.
Here’s the way the contest
will work:
On Monday, Oct. 20, Mrs.
Godwin will begin accepting
entries in the “You Name It”
competition and will continue
to accept them until the follow
ing Friday.
AT THAT TIME, a commit
tee composed of one facuky
member and two disinterested
students will select the most
clever, most suitable name foi
the paper.
Members of the journalism
class have been ruled out, but
all other students are invited
and urged to submit a title.
These titles should be written
on a slip of paper, also bearing
the name of the contestant.
Only one restriction—each stu
dent is limited to one entry.
