New Student Officers Are Elected
President's Message
Another college year is well
under way at Asheville-Bilt-
more. It promises to be one of
the most signifcant in the his
tory of the institution.
It has been our pleasure to
welcome back a great Sopho
more class and to extend greet
ings for the first time to a most
sT)lendid group of freshmen. A
new spirit is evident on the
campus ... a spirit which bodes
well for the future.
Returning students will note
many changes here. New regu
lations designed for the benefit
of the student have been
adopted; our scholastic offer
ing has been enriched and ex
panded; our fine faculty has
been strengthened by the ad
dition of new and well qualified
m.em^bers. For the first time in
the history of the college, an
orientation program was con
ducted at the beginning of the
term. Recently, another prece
dent was set when the college
inaugurated a program design
ed to make our institution
pe?'ve more adequately the
ne^ds of our community. Eve
ning classes in a wide variety
rf subiects taught by members
of the regular faculty are now
available These are some of
the tangible evidences of pro
gress attained during the past
few months. A finer spirit of
enthusiasm, cooperation, and
loyalty is one of the outstand
ing intangibles to be chronicled.
One of our goals is to make
Asheville-Biltmore a finer col
lege. We must all cooperate to
make it an institution in which
all can take pride. It must be
made to function so that those
v/ho share in its program will
derive maximum benefits. It is
my sincere hope that each and
everyone of you will be able to
make this the most happy and
profitable year of your edu
cational career.
Last year was said to be the
greatest one in the history of
our college. But we must not
rest on our laurels. Let us all
students, faculty and
friends of the college ... unite
our efforts to carry our grow
ing institution to still greater
HEIGHTS.
Dr. Glenn L. Bushey.

Foster Speaks
At Assembly
Robert Foster, Jr., of George
Washington university, .southeast
ern instructor of the C.C.U.N., ad
dressed the A—B college student
body on the subject, “The Pur
pose of the United Nations,” in
an assembly program Tuesday,
Sept. 21, in the annex.
Mr. Foster explained what the
purpose of the C.C.U.N. is, and
illustrated how the chapter for
this college will be formed. He
emphasized that you must “know
what you are selling” when be
coming a member of the C.C.U.N.,
and that it was not a force but an
arganization among nations.
A panel discussion on “How to
be Happy Though in College” was
conducted by Dean W. W. Han-
naman following Mr. Poster’s ad
dress. In the discussion. Dean
Hannaman emphasized “doing
something worthwhile” in making
a person happy, and asked the
student body several questions.
Miss Mary T. Miller gave the
devotions, which were followed by
announcements.
Dr. Glenn L. Bushey, college
president, presided.
College Band
To Be Organized
Grady Nichols, organizer and
leader of our new band, is well
qualified for the job. He has been
playing the trumpet for ten years.
He was student director of the
band at Junior high in Decatur,
111. and also served in this same
position at Lee Edwards.
Wednesday nights at seven-
thirty have been set for band re
hearsal and other rehearsal time
will be announced later.
Anyone interested in playing in
the band is urged to contact Gra
dy or the College as soon as pos
sible. This invitation is extended
to the people of the Community
and anyone else who would like
to take part. Arrangements have
been made for those who would
like to play in the band but do
not have instruments.
Grady has great expectations
concerning the Asheville-Biltmore
band. “In the future”, he said, “I
believe that we can develop a good
music department and band.” He
has been living in the south for
just one year and likes it very
much.
Br. Bushev Heads
'W. N. C. T. A.
Dr. Glenn L. Bushey was elected
president of the Higher Education
division of the Western North
Carolina Teachers association at
their annual convention last week.
The sectional meetings of the
^Association on the college level
■' have received poor support in the
past. Dr. Bushey has stated that,
“It is my hope to make the Higher
^ Educational division of real value
\to administrators and college per
sonnel.”
NOTICE
Students, you had better go to
assembly. The words, “I think I’ll
cut assembly,” are well on the
way to being famous last words
here at Asheville-Biltmore.
From now on each student will
be allowed two cuts per semester,
but even these must be with a
good excuse. Any student taking
over two will be tried by a jury
composed of members of the fac
ulty and student body. If you
are lucky, you may be put on
probation.
