C., NOVEMBER 5, 1948 NO. 2 Sponsors Are Selected For Homecoming Mrs. Randall Leslie and the Misses Mary Margaret McMeans, Betty Jean Morris, and Lucille Thrash were selected as sponsors to represent the football team and band, when Asheville-Biltmore College held its homecoming at Memorial Stadium on Thursday night, October 29. The four young ladies were featured in a colorful parade dur ing the afternoon thru the down town section of Asheville, includ ing students, members of the faculty, and PUCK, the school’s new mascot Automobiles partici pating in the parade were gaily decorated in the school colors. Later, the sponsors, very prettily attired and wearing beautiful white mum corsages, were honor ed by having reserved seats along side the “Bulldog” benches. During the half-time exercises, the sponsors were driven onto the field with their escorts, where they were introduced by the presi dent of the student body, Johnny Tipton. After being introduced, first to Mars Hill fans and then on the home side, they were given a rousing cheer by the cheer leaders and students. The Alumni of Asheville-Bilt more were special guests and were seated in reserved seats marked off in the favorite red and blue Members of the Classical Co-Eds served as ushers. The day was one that will be long remem bered as a gala affair by all con cerned. “ENGLISH CLASSIC PUCK” Puck^* Joins A-BC Dinner Held For Alumni The alumni of Asheville-Bilt more were guests of the faculty and college board members at a dinner Thursday night in the Candlelight room of the Biltmore Plaza. Captain Robert Lee Smith, chairman of the board, delivered the opening address, and intro duced the board members. John Easley, president of the Alumni Association, presented the alumni to the group. Roy Taylor and Mayor Morgan spoke briefly to the gathering. Dr. Glenn L. Bushey, president of the college, introduced the faculty members. If you were walking around be tween classes on the date of Octo ber 27 and suddenly found your self shoved against the wall or your feet knocked out from under you, you must have thought it was Burner keeping in shape for the Mars Hill game. Really, it was the newest member of our student body - “PUCK” - just getting his exercise. “Puck” is now a full fledged member due to contributions amounting to $100 from the stu dents and friends of the college. He is an English Bull, four years old, and weighs 60 pounds. One look at him and you are con vinced that he is just the mascot we need for our athletic teams, big and aggressive looking. “Puck” was born September 7, 1944, and comes to us from Mr. D. E. Berkley, Jr. of Sylva, N. C. Mr. Berkley is a well known breeder of bulldogs in this area. “English Classic Puck” (that’s his registered name) is one of the best dogs in the South today. He has won several dog shows in Asheville. “Puck” plans to make his home here at Asheville-Biltmore for the rest of his life, and to supply us with an able descendant to carry on when he is gone. He says he’s particularly anxious to move “up on the hill” so he can have more room to roam around. After all, “Puck” is one of the aristocracy in the dog world so it’s fitting that he have such surroundings. In reference to his pedigree “Puck’s” sire was “Kapras Joy Bee Bee” and his dam was “English Classic Luch Nannette.” Both are dogs of excellent breeding with many champions in their ancestry. Don’t let all those high sounding names fool you, though. “Puck” is a regular fellow. He speaks to everybody and has never met a stranger. Wherever you see Asheville- Biltmore students from now on, there you will see “Puck” or one of his descendants. He is a great sym bol for a great-and soon will be greater-college.
