The bulk of the collection was given by the AAUW in a record shower last winter, and was added to recently by a former Asheville citizen, Mr. Pat Rudolph. The rec ords are of the standard 78 RPM and the new 33 RPM. The record collection covers the best and oftentimes the most popu lar works from Bach through Strav insky, including our own Gershwin and Kern. Many of the better known com positions in the classic field are in cluded in the collection. Among them are excerpts from the Porgy and Bess musical by George Gersh win; the famed Scheherazade Suite by Rimsky-Korsakov; Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata; The Nutcracker Suite, themes from the Sleeping Beauty ballet, and the famed first concerto by Tschaikovsky; music from the opera Carmen by Bizet; The Grand Canyon Suite by Grofe’, an American; the Grieg Piano Con certo; excerpts from the musical Showboat by Jerome Kern; and some very fine selections from the contemporary and controversial Stravinsky. Also in the collection are exam ples of compositions by composers not so well known by the general public, but excellent ones neverthe less, Dukas, Milhaud, Taylor, Smet ana, Moussorgsky, Dvorak, Kabal evsky, and Hanson, to name a few. Of course, there are some of the more outstanding works of Brahms, Straus, Schubert, Chopin, Rossini, and Mozart... all known and loved by everyone. WLU5 records is at the disposal of Ashe- ville-Biltmore students. They may be checked out through the library, as one would a book, for one hour periods and may be renewed for an other hour if desired.
