C., May 5, No. 11 BRADV AKD ElllOE CHOSEK STIIDEIII SPEAKERS George Brady, president of Sig ma Mu Pi, and student body presi dent Quentin Enloe have been chosen student speaker for gradua tion exercises at the college on June 4. Brady, choice of the faculty, will speak on the subject, “The Indi vidual—Strength and Hope of a Democracy.” Enloe, the student- selected speaker, will present “The Importance of the Individual.” The baccalaureate sermon is scheduled in Seely Hall Sunday afternoon, June 3, at four o’clock, with final exercises set for 10:30 a. m. the following day. Mrs Serota is general chairman for the programs; Mrs. Lowrance is in charge of baccalaureate, and Miss Miller, marshals. BLUETS WINS MEDALIST HONORS IN COLUMBIA PRESS CONTEST Bluets, the literary magazine of the college, has done it again. The high - ranking Asheville - Biltmore publication has been named winner of medalist honors in the Columbia Press Association contest for the third consecutive year. A product of the college’s crea tive writing department, the prose and poetry magazine gained nation al prominence during the Press As sociation’s 1938 competition. The same year. Bluets was winner of first place honors in competition with junior colleges throughout the nation. Since 1938 the magazine has won either first place or medal ist awards, highest honors obtain able in the junior college division. The near phenomenal success of the magazine can be attributed in part to Mrs. Wishart and five stu dents enrolled in creative writing classes here at the college. During the course of the term, short stor ies, book reviews, poems and miscel laneous writings are handed to the instructor, who in turn edits the material before publication. Any changes in the writings, how ever, are done by the students themselves. Members of this year’s class are Mac Spears, Ruby Jean Herring, David Belcher, Betty Anne Fryar, and Quentin Enloe. In ad dition, material for the magazine has been submitted by Mary Hig gins, Sylvania Lyda, Bobbie Capps, Vir^nia Speirakis, Carl Greene, Jr., Joan Dysland, Opal Tate, James Tabor, Arberta Floyd, Jean Harri son, George McCoy, and Bennie Reece. The magazine is issued semi-annually, in May and Decem ber. CLASSICAL COEDS SPONSOR MAY DAY The second annual May Day pro gram sponsored by the Classical Coeds was presented Tuesday after noon, May 1, on the west campus of Asheville-Biltmore. Advance invitations were sent to schools throughout this section. The May Day program received consid erable publicity from local papers and the college radio program. Bobbie Capps was chairman of the event and was assisted by Betty Anne Fryar. Rose Marie Brown was crowned (Continued On Page 3)
