The Ridgerunner, February 24, 1967 Page 6 Battling A-B Bulldogs End Season Saturday A-B’s Battling Bulldogs closfii' out the 1966-67 basketball sea son Saturday night in Maryville; Tenn., with one of the most ex citing cage quints ever to m^e the WNC scene. Prior to Thursday night’s tilt with St. Leo’s Monarchs, A-B was 15-9 for the season alter losing a last-second heartbreak- er to the Quantico Marines 74- 72 plus the wild-scoring upset by Milligan, 100-96. Fans who saw that Quantico- A-B game witnessed one of the best - played tilts seen in the mountains. The scrappyBulldogs went up against as much exper ience as they usually face in half a season. Some of the Marine squad had seen service in Nat ional Invitation and NCAA Tour naments whil e others had play ed on Armed Forces All-Star teams. . A-B wasn’t awedabit, prompt ly shot to a six-point lead thanks ■'to Guy Batsel, Jim McElhaney and Steve Lucas. Big Larry Ar- rick battled Marine Center Jim Myers for the rebounds and after Quantico tied it at halftime, the Bulldgos promptly forged ano ther six point lead, then another. Quantico kept battling back and it may have been those extra years of experience that meant the difference in the last second when A-B’s Mai Blankenship fouled Bill Sheridan and the Ma rine sank both throws. Time ran out before McElhaney’s heave hit the other end of the court. In the Quantico dressing room after the game, the constant query was about A-B’s No. 22 (Batsel). The Marines were mightily impressed by Guy’s ac curate shooting, wanted to know his total score (29 points and tops for the title). Two records fell on the trip to Milligan. Batsel broke the senior college scoring record set last year by Jim Baker and A-B broke the individual game record for having the most fouls called on the Bulldogs. Previously, the re cord was 31 against Tampa during the 1964-65 season. But on Mil ligan’s home court, the whistle blew 41 times when the referee pointed his finger at A-B. As a team, A-B was averag ing 84.8 points a game against its opponents’ 75.2 going into the St. Leo game. The Bulldogs had a 44 per cent accuracy re cord on field goals and 71 per cent for free throws. The team rebounding average is 41.9 per game. Oddly, the top rebounder against the Marines was not Ar- rick but Batsel, who collected 14. Arrick and McElhaney e^ch had 11. Batsel continues to set the scoring pace, averaging 21.3 points for a 490-total. He is hit ting 53 per cent of his field goal trys. Batsel also leads In free throws with 84 of 111 for a 76 per cent record of success. Arrick is far in front on re bounds, averaging 11.1 per game for a 256-total. Mai Blankenship is second with 199 and Batsel, with 113, is third, A-B has won eight and lost three home games this season while, on the road, they are 7-6.
