Because of illness John Spellman has left the kitchen of UNC-A and Uncans' appetitive preferences in the hands of vivacious Michael Keyes. Keyes comes fresh from UNC-Charlotte, where he occupied the same post. Asheville is at least a change of pace for this dashing bachelor, native of San Diego. A graduate in hotel and restaurant management from the University of Denver, he worked throughout his college career with the University's food service. Keyes is full of friendly concern for students and help. The door to his office is always open for comments, criticisms and compliments. Our strong, silent, efficient, fast-working manager, behind his quiet smile, is always busy thinking up new ways to bring Saga's tantalizing tid-bits to our starving students. Diligence Paid Off; Constitution Passed by ED HANNAN special to THE RIDGERUNNER The newly proposed constitution for the SGA was ratified Friday, Feb. 13 when the polls closed the show 330 of the 657 voting students had approved the revised draft. The constitution stipulated that a simple majority of the students voting would be required for passage. Mike Durner, newly appointed president of the SGA stated, "We just kept the polls open iuntil we got one more vote than the simple majority." THE RIDGERUNNER asked Durner if he approved of the new constitution, bringing up the fact that the polls were open for so long to get the last affirmative vote. Durner answered, "The main idea behind the new constitution was not my idea. We all know that this school will never be large enough so that the individual classes will be able to take care of their own functions. There Y. D. (., Y. R. C. Formed Organizational meetings for the formation of Young Democrats and Young Republicans Clubs were held Friday, Feb. 21, in the Private Dining Room of the UNC-A Cafeteria. The Young Democrats met at 10 a.m. followed by a meeting of the Young Republicans at 11 a.m. The Young Democrats have as officers: Glen Cunningham, President; Steve Fricke, Vice President; Linda Cantrell, Secretary-Treasurer; and Grady Thomas, Public Relations Director. Dr, Gene R^’ney of the Political Science Department is faculty advisor for the club. On the Young Republicans cabinet is: Lance Edward Cook, President; Dan Kienker, Vice President; Mary Millsaps, Secretary-Treasurer; and Mike Rayfield, Public Relations Director. Mr. Mike Schofield of the Political Science Department is faculty advisor for the Young Republicans. At press time we were unable to receive any information from the leaders of the Young Democrats, so a feature article on both the clubs is planned for the next issue of the RIDGERUNNER. March 11, at 10:00 in The Humanities Lecture Hall, The Young Republicans have planned a meeting with Luke Atkinson, Asheville City Councilman and 11th Congressional District hopeful as main speaker. will always be a money problem." "Well, like I was saying the new constitution allows the SGA to pool its resources. The Student Senate would organize and plan all activities because now the SGA officers are part of the Student Senate. It will help correct gross errors in spending money. Also, the constitution has set new times for the election of officers so there'll be a carry-over between the years. Don't forget, next year, we'll have a sophomore class and the constitution is necessary for this new class." Durner answered that he could not speak "with authority" on the constitution during the interview because he had no copies with him at the time. But he said that the new constitution has several shortcomings in that "I don't think it provides for the best system possible in the future. I think its workable now, but in the future, there will be a need for more sophistication, especially as the classes grow. This constitution is adequate for the governmental mentality of the students now. Anything more involved would be bad. This new one is adequate for the needs of the students of today." THE RIDGERUNNER asked Durner how he planned to use the new constitution considering that he had stepped into office suddenly and without time to plan his activities in detail. Durner answered that he had no intention of "pushing any limits, I don't want any more constitutional decisions." He added that he had kept the "constitution in mind" when he had directed new policies written. At this time, Durner revealed that new policies were being written concerning "the elections of Homecoming Queen and Miss UNC-A, the Emergency Loan Fund, The Traffic Code, a Student Review Board is being established to handle all student gripes and student seats on faculty committees are being looked into," Durner accented the student Irepresentation on faculty committees by adding that this work would take up most of the remainder of his time. Hiss UNC-A And Slioos Reba Fleenor, senior-history, crowned Miss UNC-A at the Valentine's Day dance, is escorted across the floor by Bulldog basketball star, Lee Shuster.
