Amendment To
Constitution To
Student participation in all of
the Institutional Committees of
the college, proposed by Dean
Riggs and the Executive
Committee, was approved by the
Faculty Senate on September
18. Voting rights were extended
to the new student members,
with the policy going into effect
immediately.
The Institutional Committees
involved are: Library, Athletics,
Testing, Teacher Education,
Learning Resources, Programs,
Honors, Admissions, and
Scholarship and Aid. Mike
Durner, last year’s S.G.A.
president, had requested student
participation on these
cpmmittees, except for Honors,
Admissions, Scholarship and
Aid. The Executive Committee
proposed adding sutdent
membership to these committees
also, but limiting students to
participation in policy decisions,

confidential information
contained in individual
decisions.
Bill Coonan, this year’s
S.G.A. president, has submitted
a list of proposed students for
these committees to Dean Riggs
and Chancellor Highsmith for
their approval.
The Faculty Senate also gave
its approval to the addition of
three students to the Academic
Policies Committee of the
Faculty Senate. This had been
proposed last year by the
S.G.A,, and at that time was
rejected by the Faculty Senate.
With the Faculty Senate
approval and recommendation,
this still awaits the crucial vote
of the whole faculty to amend
the present Faculty Senate
Constitution, which requires a
majority vote of approval by tlie
entire faculty. This vote is
expected to take place at the
next faculty meeting, about

UNC-A Evaluation
Needs Students
Student involvement in its
evaluation is being urged by the
Self-Study Committee. The
report submitted by this
committee will determine
UNC-A’s accreditation for the
next ten years by the Southern
Association of Colleges and
Schools.
The Self-Study report, to be
finished by Christmas, covers the
whole spectrum of the
institution through its various
sub-commit tee s. These
sub-committees are examining
the college’s purpose,
organization, adi.\inistration,
educational facilities, finances,
faculty, physical structure,
possible graduate frcilities, and
special programs. These
evaluations include all present
phases of the school and possible
projections on improvements.
changes and developments for
the next ten years.
Chancellor Higlismith and
Dean Riggs have endorsed
sti dent participation in ' the
evaluation of the college. Mr.
Richard Reed, chairman of the
Self-Study steering committee,
has urged student involvement,
desiring to cover all points of
view regarding university
policies, programs, facilities.
Bill Coonan, S.G.A.
president, is helj)ing to select
interested students to serve on
these cc^minittees. Mr. Redd
suggests tiiat students participate
here and help to effect changes
through constructive criticism,
rather than in the Snack Shop.
Interested students should
contact Mr. Reed or Bill
Coonan.
All students interested in taking an English requirement exemption
test should contact the Literature Department immediately. This
would exempt you from the required 105 course, if passed. Thie test
will be given during the week of October 12-16.
Student participation is still badly needed by the SGA. President
Coonan asks that all interested students please come up to the SGA
office, Lipinsky Student Center. Don’t be sky— you’re needed.
