UNC-A Theatre Presents ‘LaRonde’
Who is having an affair with whom seems to be the question in “La
Ronde,” the sophisticated comedy by Arthur Schnitzler, which will
be presented by Theatre UNC-Asheville in Lipinsky Auditorium May

A sophisticated game of love
and seduction is played in “La
Ronde,” a comedy by Arthur
Schnitzler, which will be present
ed by the Theatre of the Univer
sity of North Carolina at Ashe
ville on May 18, 19, 20 at 8:15
p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium.
Set m Vienna at the turn of
the centuary, “La Ronde” con
sists of ten interlocking scenes in
which one partner in each scene
is handed on to a partner in the
next scene. Thus, ^ter a soldier
picks up a parlor maid at a beer
garden, the parlor maid seduces
the young son in the household
where she works. The young man
in turn has an affair with the
nervous young wife of an older
man. Meanwhile the husband in
vites a sweet young miss he has
met in the park to become his mis
tress. The young miss is having an
affair with a poet who is having an
affair with an actress who is hav
ing an affair with a count.
The chain continues until all
the characters, from the lowest to
highest levels of society, are linked
in the “round dance” that gives the
play its title.
Tickets for “La Ronde” are
$1.25 for students, faculty, and
staff, and $2.00 for the general
public. Tickets will be on sale at
Lipinsky Auditorium on the nights
of performance. %
Two theatrical veterans head
the cast of “La Ronde,” which
will be presented by Theatre
UNC-Asheville May 18-20.
Patsy M. Clarke and John
Bridges, both of Asheville, will
appear as the Actress and the
Count in the sophisticated come
dy about love and seduction in
old Vienna.
Mrs. Clarke, a senior literature-
drama major at UNC-Asheville,
has acted with the Asheville
Community Theatre, Greensboro
College Players, the Carolina
Playmakers in Chapel Hill, and
the Greenville, S. C., Little Thea
tre. At UNC-Asheville she was
seen last spring as Mrs. Hard-
castle in “She Stoops to Con
quer.”
Bridges holds two degrees in
theatre from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill and
since 1956 has played over 40
roles for the Asheville Community
Theatre. He is community activi
ties director for Pack Memorial
Library.
Also in the cast are Donna Click
as the Girl of the Streets, Dennis
Lewter as the Soldier, Lynn Hyde
as the Parlor Maid, and Jeff Sum
eral as the Young Gentleman.
Miss Glick, a freshman drama
major, is from Port Republic,
Virginia, She appeared as Cly-
temnestra in “Oresteia” last fall.
Miss Hyde is a junior drama major
from Asheville who has appeared
in “The Physicists” and “Ores
teia” at Theatre UNC-Asheville.
She was a resident actress at the
Keene State College Summer
Theatre in Keene, New Hamp
shire, this past summer.
Lewter is a junior drama major
from Asheville who has appear
ed in “Oresteia” as Apollo and
“She Stoops to Conquer” as Sir
Charles Marlowe. Sumeral is a
freshman from Greenville, S. C.
and was seen in “Oresteia”
and “The Wonderful Tang.”
Completing the cast are Joni
McAfee as the Young Wife, Rob
Storrs as the Husband, Dee Grier
as the Sweet Young Miss, and
Michael Meagher as the Poet.
Mrs. McAfee is a native of Con
necticut, where she has acted at
the Long Wharf Theatre in New
Haven. She studied acting at the
North Carolina School of the Arts
and has appeared at Theatre
UNC-Asheville as Kate in “She
Stoops to Conquer” and with the
Asheville Community Theatre
in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Her
husband, Charles McAfee, is a
senior history and classics major
at UNC-Asheville.
Rob Storrs, a sophomore drama
major from Richmond, Virginia,
has played leading roles in “The
Physicists” and “Oresteia.”
Miss Grier, from Charlotte, N. C.,
is a junior drama-literature major
whose previous roles include Con
stance in “She Stoops to Con
quer” and Athena in “Oresteia.”
Michael Meagher has appeared
in “The Physicists,” “She Stoops
to Conquer,” and “Oresteia.” He
is a senior drama and history
major from Nashua, New Hamp
shire.
