Work Begun On Constitution The'Student Government As sociations Constitution Com mittee under the Chairmanship of SGA Vice-President, Frank Dosier is to begin meeting this week to work on rewriting the present SGA constitution. The Ridgerunner in an interview with Dosier attempted to get his views on which direction the new constitution is to take. According to Dosier, the basic questions presently ai=e: What is the purpose of thp SGA, will it be the same under the new constitution and if not, what direction wilUt take. Dosier feels that the new con stitution is “full 'of loopholes” and fs unclear. In some areas the constitution can be interpreted in many ways.. Dosier hopes this can be corrected in the new constitution. Dosier also feels that the new constitution should represent wider student views. For instance, the present way of Grade Policy Changed Dr. Roy Riggs,-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs told THE RIDGERUNNER in a recent interview that effective January 3, 1973 UNC-A will begin to ac cept “D” grades on the tran scripts of students earned at other institutions. This new policy will apply to those students who enter UNC-A after January 8, 1973 and will not apply to students who ’ have previously entered UNC-A. The new policy concerning “D” grades was a result of the new governance system for 16 univer sity campuses. In the past UNC-A has accepted “D” grades only from the six campuses tliat previously composed the univer sity system. continued page 4 classifying senators should be modified. Class officers should be done away with because the galmor of running for President of a class attracts more able bodied students than the office of Secretary. This case was brought before the Judicial Com mission in October. On the subject of the legality of the matter the commission found that the appropriation was not illegal within the framework of the Student Government As sociation Constitution. This was based on part of Section Eleven of that document. The question pertaining, to whether the girls’ basketball team is ah intercollegiate athletic organization or not was based on interviews with Coach Hartman and with Mr. Duer, Executive Secretary of. the Nat ional Association of Intercol-. legiate Athletics. Coach Hart man defined “intercollegiate athletics” as “any athletic or ganization affiliated with the UNC-A Athletic Department and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.” Mr. Duer defined it as “any athletic event between two colleges or .universities.” The resulting decision of the Judicial Com mission on this aspect was“that the ■ girls basketball team or ganized on the campus of the University of North Carolina- Asheville was indeed an inter collegiate athletic organization. Upon reviewing the two de cisions reached by the Judicial Commission it was decided that “the Student Government As sociation expenditure was legal but that the Student Government Association Senate should have questioned the status of the team.” What will happen now is that continued page 3 Campus Store Study, Report Completed Et by Michael Hawkins The senate committee assigned to investigate the campus store has concluded that the 'faculty is largely responsible for the poor service many students are having in obtaining the proper text books. A bill to have the campus store investigated was approved by the student senate on October 24. A committee made up of Chuck King, Ken Wright, and Donna Glick were assigned ' to investi gate the matter. The committee was assigned four particular areas of concern to investigate and they are as 1. The cost or overcost ofbooks 2. The resale value of books 3. The use of hard back '. and paper back books 4. Recommendations for ^ improvinganyand all of the above. After two meetings with Joyce Williamson, operator of the campus store and one meeting with Vice-Chancellor Roy Riggs, the commute made the following recommendations: A. That faculty members be required to turn in their requisition cards on time. When a’ book is late,' it > is most often because a faculty member has over looked the fact that his or her requistion is three or four weeks late. B. That faculty members be required to type their requisition cards, and to fill in all information need ed on the requisition. C. The committee recom mends .that the depart ment chairmen take a more commanding role in their departments where book requisitions and text se lection for major courses are involved D.
