Netters Downed In Meet
by Gene Spears
In their first meet of the sea
son, the UNC-A tennis team
hosted lllionois State University.
Illinois, still hot from a victory
over Vanderbilt, managed a
clean sweep in the six singles
and three doubles matches
played here Monday afternoon
before a small number of specta
tors.
Of the three top players. Gene
Syzmanski, Rick Thompson,
and Dave Ludlow, Gene Syz-
manski came the closest to taking
his second set, 4-6.
The whole team was swept
away on their first set, winning
none of the six games which com
promises a set.
Bruce Holsten, Randy Tweed,
and John Bolten were unable
to take a game from the strong
Illinois team.
Coach Fred Farzanegan in
dicated that weather and the
spring break have kept his play
ers off of the courts during prac
tice season. The clay courts,
which are better tournament
courts, were still under repair.
Three tennis players are cur
rently playing on a scholarship;
Coach Farzanegan hopes to have
more by next season. “I know of
several who would like to come
here, it’s just a matter of maney,”
he stated.
Mars Hill is slated for the next
home game when weathef
permits.

Bulldogs End Season
by Terry Wilson
The UNC-A basketball blitz
and fireworks show ended
another season Wednesday,
March-7 as The South Carolina
State Bulldogs stopped the
UNC-A Bulldogs 87-78 to win
the trip to Knasas City from Dis
trict Six of the NAIA. The UNC-
A roundballers gained the finals
by besting Presbyterian 106-98
in a shootout in the UNC-A gym.
But the home court advantage
failed the Bulldogs as S. C. State
won going away.
This was not the best , year for
the Bulldogs as things go, but if
one can take the time to see
through the clouds of 17 defeafs,
there are a few bright spots on
he horizon. Senior Bob Wolf
erased Mai Blankenships old
mark in field goal percentage as
he shot 62.4% from the field.
Seven of the Bulldogs shot
over 50% from the field this
season. This was enough to keep
UNC-A in the top twenty teams
in the NAIA, as far as field goal
shooting goes, for most of the
season. The final percentage for
the entire team was 50.3%. ix
of the Bulldogs finished in double
figures for the season. Doug
Murray finished in the lead with
an average of 14 points per
game. Following close behind
were Grace 12.7, Phesant, 11.2,
Gautier 10.8, Rhyne 10.7, and
St. Clair 10.1. Murray also snared
330 rebounds. Four of these
players still have playing itme
left and should provide an ex
perienced team backbone for the
next Bulldogs. Frank Rhyne
was voted the Most Improved
Player on the team and Mike
Grace was the Most Valuable
Player for this season.
The season record shows an
11-5 record at home and a dis-
asterous 4-12 record away. The
toummanet plays saw the Bull
dogs break even at 3-3, and the
District Playoffs saw a 1-1 record.
