Ski Class Successful
by Donna Click
Each week during this term, the
ski slopes of Catalloochee have
been occupied by eager and un
suspectful UNC-A students.
These students are determinded
to capture a rich man’s art under
not so rich circumstances.
For a mere $45, students are
receiving the instructions of a
licensed ski instructor and re
ceiving a one'hour physical educa
tion credit.
Among the students taking
advantage of this opportunity are
Jane Windle, a junior from Fort
Lauderdale, Florida and Dalton
Mcllwain, a freshmen from Win
ston-Salem, North Carolina.
In an interview Ms. Windle
outlined the preliminary steps
taken to acquaint the student with
the snowy environment;
“The first step involves learn
ing how to fail down, and how to
maintain an upright position in
the snow. After that students
practice walking uphill and learn
how to gather momentum”,
she explained.
“We’ve came from nothing to
some pretty advanced stuff,”
states Dalton Mcllwain. “Now
we’re in the process of advanc
ing to the intermediate slopes,”
Mcllwain said.
Ms. Mcllwain goes on to say,
“a great deal of the success of
Nancy Gardner, (left) and Roger Campbell, (right) show that skiing has its “UPS’ and “DOWNS.”
the class is due to the working
spirit of Molly Hill, UNC-A
physical education instructor.
Ms. Hill is learning to ski along
with the students and has given a
good amount of her time to in
sure the success of the class.”
When asked about her feelings
concerning the objectives of the
class, Ms. Windle said “We’re
learning to ski correctly so we
won’t be a menace on the slopes.”
Ms. Mcllwain believes the ob
jectives of the class are being
attained. “UNC-A is getting a
new physical education course
and is utilizing the area’s re
sources and perhaps more im
portantly is presenting a differ
ent social and recreational event
for the students.”
Both students conveyed a very
enthusiastic feeling about the
class and the skiing experience
they are receiving. As Ms. Windle
puts it, “1 really enjoy the class
and I’m definitely getting my
money’s worth.”
Bulldogs Look To Playoffs
The UNC-A Bulldogs an
nounced Saturday night, Feb
ruary 3rd that they will be in
volved in post-season activities.
The activities are the NAIA
playoffs. UNC-A clinched a
playoff berth by downing Charle
ston Baptist College 86-77 in a
come from behind win.
This win will allow UNC-A
top seating in the conference and
a win over the Lander Senators
will allow the Bulldogs to play
host to the NAIA District Six
Tournament. If the Bulldogs
loose and South Carolina State
finishes with an 8-2 conference
record a tie-breaking move will
he needed to determine the top
team.
UNC-A began the drive to the
playoffs in near disasterous
fashion. January 27, was the day
UNC-A was to play Mars Hill in
district competition, but, for the
first three minutes it seemed
like UNC-A had forgotten to
show up.
Mars Hill opened up an out
side-inside attack, and the Bull
dogs just opened up. It took
almost three minutes for the
bulldogs to score and by then
the Lions were ahead by a very
comfortable ten points.
The Bulldogs tried galliantly
throughout the first half, but
Mars Hill seemed to be pulling
away.
The second half saw the Lions

six minutes of the game saw the
Bulldogs roar back from oblivion
and take the lead on Jimmy

Joe Jones iced the cake and the
Bulldogs went home winners 79-75.
The next game saw the Bull
dogs venture into the Carolina’s
Conference to play Barber-
Scotia. When it was all over the
’dogs were on the short end of
the deal 105-102.
Then came Saturday; the game

be the man of the hour as he
