Dr. Beverly Dexter, a special education
professor from Western Carolina, was kid

Thursday night at 9:40 P.M. while going
to her car in the parking lot of the Zagier

and made her drive down Look-out Road,
WUNF Manager Resigns
Dave Anderson, manager of WUNF-
FM, resigned from his position with
WUNF-FM on Feb. 2, citing personal and
academic reasons.
The Executive Board of the Radio Sta
tion has decided that John Covey, who was
the assistant manager, will assume the
position. The Executive Board also con
sidered some questionable expenditures
made by Anderson prior to his resignation,
and decided to have the Business Office
debit his account for a pro-rated amount
equivalent to the scholarship for the re
mainder of the semester. Anderson had
allocated himself a scholarship for the
entire semester.
Anderson came to UNC-A in 1973,
after working for three years as an engi-
Variety Groups at Homecoming
through the Emma section, and to Wood-
fm. He once made her pull over, but a
police cruiser passing by made him force
her to keep driving. Dr. Dexter was held
for over an hour.
After arriving in Woodfin, the man
jumped out and entered a house. Dr.
Dexter observed him through the rear
view mirror. She reported the incident at
10:30 P.M. to the Asheville City Police,
who notified the Campus Security Police
neer with a company which builds malls in
the northeast. He has worked with a radio
station in Cincinnati, and as a D.J. for
WKKE in Asheville. He is a member of
Phi Alpha Theta, a history honor society,
is president of the Young Democrats Club,
and has performed in two Forum Theatre
productions and three major productions
with Theatre UNC-Asheville.
Anderson stated in his resignation that
“I have worked toward some specific
goals...have been able to rebuild the sta
tion, establish a stability and responsible
staff, set up a continuity and at least ac
ceptable format that for the first time
provides the university and community
with a viable radio station that is consistent
and listenable^
UNC-A Chooses
Interns
By FORREST REID
UNC-A is one of four colleges in the
16th Congressional District which will
participate in an eight-week national con
gressional internship program. The pro
gram has been initiated by newly elected
Congressman Lamar Gudger, and will be
shared on a rotating basis between Warren
Wilson, Mars Hill, Western Carolina, and
UNC-A.
One intern will be selected each year
from one of the participating colleges. The
program will last eight weeks, beginning
in March of each year. Two of the eight
weeks will be spent in Asheville with Con
gressman Gudger’s regional office. The
two-week period in Asheville will be de
voted to reading and researching the nature
of the responsibilities of the position.
The remaining six weeks will be spent
in Washington, D.C., where the intern
will assist Congressman Gudger in re
searching bills, speeches and committee
work. The intern will receive a salary
through Congressman Gudger’s office,
which is not yet determined but should
cover all expenses incurred dumg the pro
gram. The intern will also receive scho
lastic credit of 9 semester hours thrugh the
department of his/her major.
This being the first year of the program,
it is still uncertain whether or not UNC-A
will be the first institution to participate in
the program. An ad hoc committee, con
sisting of Dr. Phillip Walker (Chairman,
Dept, of History), Dr. Donald Hart (Chair
man, Dept, of Management), and Mr.
Goetz Wolff (Dept, of Political Science),
was established to interview applicants.
On Wednesday Feb. 9, the committee
selected Ms. Carolyn York, a senior clas
sics major and aspiring lawyer, to repre
sent the school should the honor first fall to
UNC-A.
Chancellor William E. Highsmith
stated that by the end of February it should
be known whether or not UNC-A will be
the first to participate.
The program is expected to provide an
excellent opportunity for those interns
selected to experience for themselves the
actual nature of national government.
INTERN CANDIDATE
Carolyn York, a senior classics major
from Virginia, was selected by an ad hoc
committee to represent UNC-A as a Con
gressional intern in Washington, D.C. It is
still undecided whether the UNC-A candi
date will be the first to participate in the
program, or if it will be on a competitive
basis for this year (see accompanying
article).
Ms. York is a registered nurse, who
formerly worked as a nursing supervisor at
St. Joseph Hospital. She is interested in
social action law such as civil liberties and
legal aid.
Ms. York transferred to UNC-A Jan
uary 1976 from Chapel Hill. She is now a
full-time student at UNC-A.
By “STAR” NEWBERRY
This year UNC-A is celebrating its 50th
year as an educational institution. It is
hoped that the students will attend and
enjoy the Homecoming game and dance
this Saturday.
The dance will be at the Grove Park Inn,
and will begin at 9:30. Admission is free to
full-time students, and I.D.’s will be
checked at the door.
The band will be “Sugarcreek,” a ver
satile variety band, and an added attraction
is “The Dance Masters,” a very talented
dance group. Refreshments will be pro
vided.
The Masters have been dancing and
touring as a group for three years. They
plan to perform several numbers from their
new routine, featuring Miss Ann Harrison,
who joined the group Jan. 25, 1977. Miss
Harrison was a contestant in the Miss
Asheville Versatile Black Pageant and is
on Friday afternoon. The man was arrested
in the house on Friday at about 6:15 P.M.
Acording to Campus Security Police
Chief Ray, the man stated that he “had to
get out of this area, fast” when he and Dr.
Dexter were getting in her car. Chief Ray
thinks the man meant he had to leave the
University grounds.
Dr. Dexter, who could not be contacted
for comment, was said to have remained
calm, and talked with the man until they
arrived in Woodfin. Sgt. Cook stated that
Dr. Dexter “did a marvelous job, she
talked hard and fast the whole time.”
The preliminary hearing was scheduled
for Monday, Feb. 14. The man is presently
being charged with kidnapping, which
carries a minimum penalty of two years
imprisonment. The man offered no reason
for his action. He confessed after being
identified by Dr. Dexter. The trial will be
held in the Superior Court early next
month.
Chief Ray states that the man had been
seen on campus before by several Security
guards. He also states that the Asheville
City Police Chief did not know why the
Campus Security was not notified earlier,
but stated that they would be notified im
mediately in any future incidents on cam
pus that come to their attention.
currently enrolled at South French Broad
