Number 17 SPECIAL EDITION New Vice-Chancellor Approved After a lengthy and involved search, UNC-Asheville has a new Vice- Chalcellor for Academic Affairs who will replace Dr. Roy Riggs upon his retirement at the end of this academic year. Dr. Laurence A. Dorr has been named to the position after several months of interviewing and confer ences between students, faculty, and administration. Dr. William E. Higlismith, Chan cellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, made the an nouncement after the nomination was approved by the University of North Carolina Board of Govenors last Fri day. Dr. Highsmith stated, “We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Dorr join us as our vice- chancellor, the sen ior academic position on this cam pus. He has excellent qualifications, both academic and administrative, for the position.” Dr. Dorr was selected from among 429 inquiries and applications which were narrowed to five can didates who were here for a week- long session of interviews- and-ob serving. On February 8, 1978 the search was narrowed even more. From the five candidates, two were recom mended to the Chancellor by the Vice- Chancellor for Academic Affairs Search Committee. These two were Laurence A Dorr and Woodworth G. Thrombley. Dr. Dorr received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Boston College and his Ph.D. from the University of Michi gan. He has done additional work and studying in Louvain, Belgium. He comes to UNC-A from Kean Col lege (formerly Newark State) of New Jersey, where he held a similar posit ion. He is married and is the father of one daughter. Dr. Dorr replaces Dr. Roy A. Stevenson Resigns Zollie Stevenson, Jr., Assistant to the Dean of Students, has resigned as an employee of the University of North Carolina at Asheville ef fective May 12, 1978 to accept ad mission into the Ph.D. program in educational psychology at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Mr. Stevenson has worked with the Stu dent Services Office for three years here at UNC-A and has provided many new ideas and has structured several new programs. He is also the recipient of a $4,500 graduate assistantship in the School of Education at Howard University. He has served for the past one-and-one-half years as the co ordinator of The University Com mittee for Cultural and Special E- vents, Student Organizations, and Orientation for Freshmen and their parents. He earned the B.A. degree in psychology from UNC-Asheville in 1975. The M.S. degree was earned in 1977 at North Carolina A & T University in counseling. Mr. Stevenson is a former editor of THE RIDGERUNNER and Presi dent of Student Government. He has been a definite asset to the universi ty community and his leaving will be a loss to the university; never theless, we wish hime the most success in his endeavour.
