UNC-A GIRLS LOSE On Monday night, Jan. 8th, in Justice Gym, UNC-A’s womens’ basketball team suffered a humil iating defeat at the hands of Len- oir-Rliyne - 105-66. There is no other way' to describe the game except by the old cliche that ‘they were blown out’ of the Gym. llie game started with UNCA in a zone. Lenoir-Rhyne at tacked the weak side drawing out UNC-A and then finding creases and holes in the zone for easy shots. Lenoir-llhyne used a very quick passing of fence which let them penetrate easily. In all fairness, the game was close until 5:45 was left in the first half with Lenoir-Rhyne hav ing a 13-point lead at 41-28. From then until the end of the half, Lenoir-Rhyne outscored UNC-A 14-4, leaving a score of 55-32 at the half. Tliey tore the game open with repeated lay-ups and fast breaks. They op erated their offence at will over and around UNC-A’s front line, with UNC-A’s center position totally ineffective.., (Cois-f. fop) The second half started with a tightening of their zone by UNC-A and trading baskets with Lenoir- Rhyne. Around the thirteen- minute mark though, Lenoir- Rhyne was back in their destroy offence and completely shutting down UNC-A again. UNC-A was plagued with numerous turn overs and giveaways, all leading it seemed to Lenoir-Rhyne lay-ups. With her team leading 76-56, Coach Pat Smith of Lenoir-Rhyne sent in her second team at the 9:47 mark. At 6:45, it was88-60 and 92-62 at 5:17. Then Coach Smith went to a questionable strategy putting her first team back in. The question was an swered when at the 2:28 mark, Lenoir-Rhyne scored their 100th point (100-66),then she put her second team back in; an other wise flawless effort marred by their running up the score. To add insult to injury, UNC-A re ceived a technical foul for six players on the floor with 2:16 left in the game. Finally, it was all over. Number 30, Sally Reid, number 32 Donna Elred, and number 34 Brenda Harrison were the offensive and defensive play ers for Lenoir-Rhyne. They com bined for 70 points with Elred the highest with 27 points, 16 re bounds, and numerous times re sponsible for UNC-A turnovers. Heather Harrison, the freshman from Canton, was the only bright spot for UNC-A with a perform ance that just wouldn’t quit. She finished with 24 points, 16 in the disastrous 2nd half, and six re bounds. Her scrappy play was what helpted the Bulldogs stay as close as they did. Hiyllis Payne and Myra Sims had 10 each for the Bulldogs. Coach Quinn, after the game, mentioned the numerous turn overs, bad shots, and poor inside play as a few of the reasons for the defeat. She stated that this game came after their best prac tice ever, that they just need to get it all together in a game. For the record, UNC-A is now 4-5, Lenoir-Rhyne evened their record at 5-5. The small crowd was 75. BY CHRIS MANGUM HRRD€€'S WELCOMES UNCA STtOENTS Present tlm coupon at the Hardee s on Merrimon Ave Get 2 Regular Roast Beef Sandwiches for only $1.69.
