5 September 24, 1979 5 Fearless Forecasts Revisited "I Told You So" Department "Spectacular Bid" .in the Kentucky Derby by five lengths. Montreal in the Stanley Cup finals in four (maybe five) games. Philadelphia over Seattle in seven in the NBA playoffs. So far we haven't done too shab bily. "Bid" won the Derby handi ly by two and three quarter lengths. The Canadiens whipped the upstart New York Rangers in five games for their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup championship. The 76'ers were a big disappointment, however, for they were eliminated in the early round by San Antonio. The team we picked to lose the finals, the Seattle Supersonics, emerged as the victor, defeating the defending world champion Washington Bullets in five games. As of press time it appears that we're batting .500 with our baseball predictions, correctly tab bing the Pirates and Angels as win ners in their division races. No one could have predicted the Dodg ers' near-total collapse. Similarly unforeseen were the untimely injuries suffered by Goose Gossage and Reggie Jackson, and the tragic death of Yankee captain Thurman Munson. The loss of these three cost New York a shot at Its third consecutive championship. Now, as promised in the spring, our forecast for the playoffs and World Series. NoVolleybJ The Athletic Department an nounced last week that the fall schedule of the women's volleyball team has been cancelled. The announcement, coming as it did only ten days before the season opener against Wake Forest and Elon, is a setback for the UNC-A women's athletic program. Several reasons, most notably the present condition of Justice Gym and student apathy, were cited for the decision. Coach Marny Richards, when asked what caused the decision to cancel this year's schedule, replied, "Some people weren't willing to commit the time and the facili ties turned a lot of people off." Unable to use the gym due to re pairs now underway to support a sagging roof, the team was forced to look elsewhere for facilities to hold practices. Six good, solid players were lined up to play but nnany more women came to prac tice sessions and promptly left the team. "We'd have had more kids and would have made good progress except for the gym problems" was the way Coach Richards assessed the situation. The team began practice sessions in the gymnastics room of Justice Gym, but it proved to be American League West California Kansas City Texas Seattle Chicago Oakland Minnesota National League West Los Angeles San Francisco Cincinnati San Diego Houston Atlanta East New York Baltimore Boston Detroit Milwaukee Toronto Cleveland East Pittsburgh Philadelphia Montreal Chicago St. Louis New York More Fearless Forecasts They haven't let me down yet so I 'II pick California and Pittsburgh to win their pennants. Nolan Ryan will prove too much for Baltimore's heavy hitters. The Bucs will take either of the western division contenders. It pains me to go against Tom Seaver and the remnants of the Big Red Machine, but this looks like Pittsburgh's year - remember the Super Bowl. In the World Series, I think Ryan's fastball will take the fall classic to six or seven games. When it's all over in October, how ever, baseball's version of Animal House, the Pirates of Pittsburgh, will be world champions. In any case, no matter how the play offs turn out, this is the year of the National League. I can't take football serious ly until after the World Series. too small to accomodate volleyball. The sessions were then moved to A-B Tech where logistics proved to be a problem. The faci lity at A-B did not have regulation volleyball equipment or a place where UNC-A could set up their own equipment. Because they hold their own practice sessions in the afternoons, local high schools could not be counted on to provide facilities on a regular basis. Bar bara Quinn, director of the women's athletic program, told us, "We didn't have an adequate facility to practice in." The Lady Bull dogs' "home" games were to have been played at South French Broad school. "You can't ask people to practice in poor facili ties and perform competitively," Coach Quinn said. UNC-A's present difficulties with Justice Gym will be resolved by next fall. In spite of this set back, the outlook is optimistic for next year's team. "We have a positive outlook for next year. With enough support from the athletic committee and the stu dents, we can make a go of it," Coach Richards said of next sea son. Plans are being made to actively recruit women for next year's squad. Subject to commit tee approval, funds allocated for this year's squad may be used to recruit for the future. If my playoff and World Series predictions don't totally de stroy my credibility. I'll return next issue with a fearless foot ball forecast. Pigskin Picks N.F.C. East Central West Dallas St. Louis Philadelphia Washington New Jersey A.F.C. Tampa Bay Atlanta Chicago Los Angeles Minnesota New Orleans Green Bay San Francisco Detroit East Central West New England Pittsburgh San Diego Miami Houston Seattle Baltimore Cleveland Denver New York Cincinnati Oakland Buffalo Kansas City ERSATZ SPORTS In a softball game held on Schlitz Day at the soccer field, the Schlitz team defeated the UNC-A squad by a score of 17-7. The UNC-A team, composed of members of the Mud 500 club, a representative of Sigma Alpha Omega and a dog, blamed the defeat on a Hawaiian party held the previ ous night. Despite the setback that cancellation of the volleyball's schedule has presented to the UNC-A women's sports program, optimism is high at Justice Gym regarding the prospects of this year's Lady Bulldog basketball team. This year's team will again be led by Coach Barbara Quinn. Although Vera Mitchell, the team's leading scorer last year, will not be returning to the lineup. Coach Quinn feels that the new recruits signed over the summer will more than compensate for the loss. "This team looks good. They have a good attitude," was the way Coach Quinn described her charges. The Lady Bulldogs will field a young team this season. With only five players returning from last season, the balance of the team will be filled by ten freshmen. The team's lack of collegiate ex perience can be made up by its raw talent. The credentials these freshmen players bring to UNC-A is testimony to the women's ath letic program's vigorous recruit ment efforts. Two examples are provided by the local players Coach Quinn recruited. Debbie Hooper, a 5'11" center, played her high school ball with the championship teams of Enka High School in 1978 and '79. Lisa Morgan, a 5'6" guard, was a three- year starter at Reynolds and last ^ivlTRAMURALS The Athletic Department is attempt ing to establish a gymnastic club as part of the intramurals program. Teresa Styles, another grad uate of Enka, is also on the squad. The five returnees are Myra Sims, Rico Matthews, Phylis Payne, Heather Harrison and Cindy Lew is. The other freshmen making up the squad are Lori Mackanin, Nancy Lorton, Lisa Rowells, Karen Sheldon, Lisa Berman, Lisa Berry and Roberta Birringer, a transfer student from North Michigan University. Kathy Har ris has been named as Quinn's assistant coach. Evelyn Day and Sharon Davies will be the team's managers. The Lady Bulldogs will play a twenty-four game schedule. High lights of the schedule include a contest against Duke at Durham and four doubleheaders with the men's squad at home. Members " of the team have already begun their pre-season conditioning in preparation for the first organ ized practice, to be held on Octo ber 9th. Coach Quinn has an nounced that this first practice will also serve as an open tryout for all interested students. Those interested in trying out for a spot on the team are asked to contact Coach Quinn at Justice Gym prior to Oct. 9th.
