Theatre CINC-Asheville presents
“The Importance of Being Earnest”
Theatre UNC-Asheville opens its
1982-83 season with Oscar Wilde’s
clasic Victorian comedy, The Im
portance of Being Earnest, Thurs
day, Oct. 21 at 8:30 p.m.
Additional perforniances are Fri
day and Saturday at 8:30 p.m., with
a Sunday matinee at 2:30.
First produced in London in 1895,
The Importance of Being Earnest
is a witty satire on the rigid social
and moral conventions of late Vic
torian society. The frothy plot
revolves around a young man-about-
town who invents a mythical
brother in order to lead a socially ac
ceptable life in the country, while
kicking up his heels in the city.
The plot, with its mistaken iden
tities and long-lost brothers, is only
a diversion, however, from the
delightful verbal wit of Oscar
Wilders famous epigrams. Lady
Bracknell, the imperious social ar
biter who is one of the great eccen
tric characters in the history of com
edy, observes, “I do not approve of
anything that tampers with natural
ignorance. Ignorance is like a
delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the
bloom is gone.’'
The Importance of Being
Earnest is presented in conjunc
tion with "A Celebration of Vic
torian Asheville,” organized by the
UNC A Department of History and
the Southern Highlands Research
Center.
A lavish, multi-course Victorian
dinner will be given prior to the
Saturday evening performance.

Earnest is directed by Elaine
Hunter Meyers, lecturer in drama at
UNC A and former actress and
teacher at the Henry Street

a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays at the Carol
Belk Theatre. Advance reservations
are necessary and can be made by

Hammerstein’s musical fantasy
“Cinderella” in December, the
French romantic comedy “Thieves’
Carnival” by Jean Anouilh in April,
a Tanglewood production for young
people in March, and the premiere of
“Kafka,” a new dramatic adapta
tion by Arnold Wengrow based on
the life and writings of Franz Kafka.
“Kafka” will be presented in
February to commemorate the
100th anniversary of the birth of one
of the 20th century’s most prophetic
writers.
